The gear shift sticks at reverse on a 99 civic

Some days it works fine, then it sticks again for a few days. How expensive is a new cable?

I think your linkage might need adjustment. Have u checked the oil for the transmission

you need a new reverse gear. the rest of your transmission should be fine but it will need to be rebuilt because you probably have pieces of the reverse gear floating around in it. it will eventually ruin the transmission if you don't fix it soon.

More then likely the park lockout solenoid is sticking or the cable it operates is sticking.

It's likely that a head gasket is blown, causing fluid to go out of the exhaust pipe especially if you see none on the ground. You might smell a 'sweet' antifreeze/water smell out of the pipe at idle.

check your shift linkages if the bushing is worn out you may have problems shifting or it could be a bad transmission

you need to have the shifting cable lubricated or replaced.
