Question about 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Truck 2WD

96 dodge caravan cranks but won't start, no dash light

I have similar problem. It happens intermittently. Last time it happened, towed to dealer and they worked on it for 1 day and could not find anything wrong. When they started working on it, the silly thing would crank up. Cost me $150 for diagnostics.

They are thinking it may be factory installed alarm that is malfunctioning and cutting off the engine - but this cannot be disabled.

Two things...
One: the dealer may be right about the alarm system. I had a similar problem with my 97 chev tahoe. The anti-theft device was shutting the electrical system down intermittently and without warning. I had to completely disconnect he system to remedy the problem.

Two: I came across a similar problem on a caravan at the shop once. At the front of the engine there is a brace (under the front of the vehicle near the rad support) There is a wiring harness the passes tightly around the brace. Sometimes the brace wears through some wires and causes the condition you are referring to. To fix the situation, you have to repair the broken/shorting wires.

If you replaced the ECM and didn't reprogram it. There's your problem. The ECM doesn't recognize the security code. And it will start and kill the vehicle three times before shutting down everything. IE.. starter, fuel.

I have 2011 Dodge Caravan It will start and then stall imediately I turn key off and start again and it starts and runs perfect. Happens 3 times a week and there is no code

It is all a guess, but maybe the ignition switch is getting bad. I.E. makes contact to ignition when starting engine, then when the key is released to the run position it is not making contact and stalls. In any case it is probably an intermittant problem and you won't find it until it goes completely out.

intermittent no start situations generally appear when you have defective crank position sensor (since it cant get idea what the crank angle is) and fuel pump issues( since it cant receive enough fuel)

Has anyone bothered to run a computer control module fault code test? That is the very first thing a tech would do. Wiggling wires is likely no the issue here as you found out.

Quite possibly the switch, Dodge minivans also have a front control module located under the hood, it attaches directly to the underhood fusebox, if a switch doesn't fix it I would look there.

1994 Dodge Caravan intermittent missing, loss of power

Number one and four are fired at the same time on a single wire from the PCM. Look for it to be intermittenly grounding somewhere along the route to the coil. You can wiggle the harness with the engine running to see if you can duplicate the miss. This will help to localize the area where you need to look closer. Look at areas where the harness crosses brackets or lays across areas like the transmission. Long term vibration can wear a small hole in the insulation causing intermittent problems on any circuit. I hope this helps.

Check MAP sensor. If PCM gets wrong data from MAP sensor it should offset ignition timing and/or make fuel mixture too lean or too rich.

98 Grand Caravan 3.3 engine starting / running problems

A bad earth connection point on my New Zealand model Chrysler Voyager LE (same car as yours but right hand drive) caused similar problems, including the towing thing. My dealer told me that they would be busy for 3 weeks - dealer talk for "we would prefer to sell you a new one".

A bunch of black wires connect to a chassis ground bolt on my model on the right hand side wall, under dashboard height. I was "lucky" to have the fault present when investigating it, and testing I did afterwards proved this to be a definite cause. You have to remove some covers and pull the floor carpet away This may be on the left on your model. A plug in connector is used, to bring multiple wires together at this point. All I had to do was undo the nut and clean the metal of the bolt and earth lug - use a file or sandpaper, and maybe spray on some WD40 or CRC to impove conductivity. I added an extra washer to help the metal to metal bond also. This seems to have fixed the problem. It has been OK now for about 1000 miles. Good luck !
