Question about 2003 Buick Rendezvous

1 Answer

Speedometer I seem to be going 25 mph, although I haven't even started the car. Therefore, in order to drive the legal 55, the speedometer says I am going 80. Tried something this morning after I arrived at work. I shut off the car, and the guage went down to 25. I quickly turned on the key, then off, and the guage dropped to 10 mph. I repeated until the guage read "0". I could hear "scratching or scrambling" noises coming from behind the control panel, so I suspect a malfunction of a timing switch. What is your take?

Please Help!!! 1999 Mercury Sable doesn't seem to accelerate past first gear..engine revs up to very high rpms.

If the speedometer stops working the odometer stops also. Sounds like it is stuck in first gear. The RPM went up because the throttle was response to pedal but transmission not response. Check transmission fluid color. Whip off dipstick on a white paper towel look for gray if see any that is metal shavings and transmission is bad.

Speedometer is jumping around

The speedometer cable needs lubricating. It can be removed from the bottom where it connects to transmission, coated with graphite and reinstalled.

Although you didn't mention it, the speedometer probably bounces also. Replacing the speed sensor on the side of the transmission should solve both your problems. Good luck

Speedometer Gauge Slipping - Inaccurate Reading

I had a car that did this to me. It started happening last year so I took it in and they were baffled. Lesson learned never take a car to a big chain store for a difficult diagnosis. They just told me to let my car warm up for 5 minutes and it would be fine. If I let it warm up it was good. This winter it started doing it again but it would do it all the time even after I let it warm up. I never bothered bringing it in again because it was dieing. If you are truly concerned take it into a mechanic ( a good one) and have them diagnose it. Your spedometer cable could just be wearing out.
