Surburban Transmissions get Bad Report

We just bought a 1999 Surburban 4x4 2500 in excellent condition to
pull a horse trailer. Now our tractor repair neighbor reacted "What ever made you buy a Surburban. I have replaced more transmissions on Surburbans; they are the worse transmissions ever made. If the car starts to suddenly lurch forward, drop the horsetrailer at the side of the road and come home." Is this bad reputation likey to be whe way it is?

As with any transmission nowadays, keep it serviced regularly, and make sure it has a good external cooler, not just rad cooled.

trailers are made from what ever parts are available at the time. Best suggestion is to take the linings/pads off a wheel and visit a local brake shop for identification

I just bought a horse trailer and when I hook it up to my 2006 Silverado, the lights don't work. My trailer hitch and wiring system are new, and the previous trailer owner tested the lighting of

Some people wire trailer plugs differently. If the plug is not wired differently than yours, make sure the tow ball is clean. No rust. That's where the trailer gets its ground from. Usually they will work if thats the case, but not right. I can't remember what the wire colors are right now. Go to etrailer and look up the diagram.

I have a 1988 GMC 3500 truck, all the lights and the radio stopped working when I hitched up my horse trailer. Same trailer works fine on my 99 dodge, same pulg to trailer. What happened?

You blew a fuse. Check the in cab and engine compartment fuse box and replace burnt fuses. It's possible that you have too many lights on the trailer. This would cause a multiple amp draw on the truck pulling more power than the typical 10-25amp fuse supplied for trailers.

Wiring problems

Hi Charlie

Six wire plugs:

Horse, stock or utility trailers:
White = Ground - GD
Yellow = Left turn/Brake -LT
Green = Right turn Brake -RT
Brown = Tail and clearance lights - TM
Red or Black (not both) = Battery, aux power - A
Blue = Electric Brakes - S

Ground should be 10ga.
Others 14 ga

How to improve power without buying a new truck

a few things you could do would be to turn up the pump, bigger injectors, add a turbo and after cooler, and differents gears in the differentials and/or transmission, rear axle airbags would improve your ride quality too, also i beleive its a 444 cu. in. engine if its an international 7.3( ford 7.3 )

Having a problem with my allison md 3060 transmission

Hi mate I had the same problem with a camper once and the only way that you will ever stop it from shifting hard into gears down shifting or up is to take it into a Detroit Allison work shop and ask them to reset the throttle position and reset Un-adaptive shifts then to do an Fast-adaptive shift with the electronic tool called Allison Doc.

Ask them also to do a clutch report on the electronic tool, that will tell you straight away the condition of the box on the inside.

Thats the problem with these new electronic transmissions they force you to go back to the suppliers. If I had my book here I could have helped you with the fault code but you would have had to take it in any way to get all the parameters reset.

What happens is that when you buy this trans new they set it to UN-adaptive shifts then to fast adaptive then it learns how long the solinoids should be open and how quick to open them to have a good shift, but over a few ignition cycles the fast-adaptive changes to normal over a year or two the clutch plates wears with a few 001 and the computer cant keep up have to be reseted which is normal to them, expect to take it back every year or two to be reseted.

Is my truck 1/2 ton or 3/4?

Hi Kimberly. I have the same model. The F-250 is a 3/4 ton truck, and more than capable of pulling your horse trailer safely.
