If you had a big short, then all relays and fuses in fuse box must be checked.

If ignition does not work you may also have damaged ignition switch. In that case it will need replacement.

After checking ignition and relay box, keep the positive unplugged and use a car tester like this :Car Electric Circuit Tester: to find out where you have the short.

I cannot fnd an electrical discharge on my 1994 Ford Escort GT 1.8l 2-Door Hatchback.

These things can take hours for even an experienced tech to find.
Had you done anything to the vehicle just before this started ? New radio ? Bumped into another car ? Anything. If so that is a place to start.
Remove the negative cable and read the voltage between the negative post on battery and the cable. If there is voltage, you have a short to ground. You can rig up a light and connect it between the negative battery post and the negative battery cable. The shorted wire will let the bulb light. Remove fuses one at a time til the light goes out and that is the circuit with the problem. Hopefully you won't have to go to removing wires.

Hi Joshua, Clean the battery terminals taking special note of the negative side. After you have completed that check the ground cable connections (the side of the negative cables that attach to the body). When fitting back the battery terminals use a thin application of white petroleum jelly to protect against oxidization and the same where the ground cables connect to the body. If the fault persists after that work check the other smaller ground connections from the fuse box and other ground connections. Make sure all the relays are pressed home firmly. Regards Johngee10

I have a 1994 chevy astro awd that the transmission will not shift out of 1st the abs light is always on and my electronic speedometer always reads 0 mph what is wrong Ps hit a bump and all these things...

Hi, you will need to check out the speed sensor on the transmission. See if the sensor or it's wiring harness was damaged from hitting the bump. The sensor is mounted with a single bolt in the tail of the transmission and looks like the picture below. If everything looks OK from the outside, it may be that the sensor has failed. There is a sensor test procedure below, but please be very careful if you do this. A new sensor is about $35. Please let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

See Figure 1

Fig. Fig. 1: Vehicle speed sensor mounting
The vehicle speed sensor is made up of a coil mounted on the transmission and a tooth rotor mounted to the output shaft of the transmission. As each tooth nears the coil, the coil produces an AC voltage pulse. As the vehicle speed increases the number of voltage pulses per second increases.

  1. To test the VSS, backprobe the VSS terminals with a high impedance voltmeter (set at the AC voltage scale).
  2. Safely raise and support the entire vehicle using jackstands. Make absolutely sure the vehicle is stable.
  3. Start the vehicle and place it in gear.
  4. Verify that the VSS voltage increases as the driveshaft speed increases.
  5. If the VSS voltage is not as specified the VSS may be faulty.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disengage the electrical connection.
  3. Unfasten the sensor retainers.
  4. Remove the sensor and gasket or O-ring.

To install:
  1. Install the sensor with a new gasket or O-ring.
  2. Fasten the sensor retainers.
  3. Engage the electrical connections.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.

Need to know how to change battery in a 2003 chev. venture van

Best way to charge / safest / is to remove battery from vehicle ...set battery in a open well venilated area / no smoking / with the apporpiate capacity 12 volt charger / read the instructions that come with the charger . Attach red connector of charger to positive post of battery (usually red) attach black connector to battery ground (-) negative side of battery / plug charger into appropiate outlet (120) . Reverese application when battery is fully charged .
Re-install battery in vehicle/ being sure to re-install as removed .
Install black cable to battery (-) negative ...then Hot (red) (+)

My headlights, power mirrors, and trunk pulldown dont work intermittently . sometimes they will work after hitting a bump. The other day I drove through a water puddle and they all started working fine

This is a hard one because you can't fix whats not broke. But on this intermittent problem the first place you want to look is the grounds under the hood. This includes the negative battery cable. Be sure to check both ends . Check as many as you can find, you are looking for loose or dirty connections. You need to check this because hitting bumps can change weather or not they work. This can be time consuming and boring but it has to be done. This is why mechanics that do electrical work charge so much its for time and what they know to save them selves time to find the problem and repair them. Good luck.

Electrical problem

there is a short on the car electric circuits, or inside the ignition block. If I was in your shoes I would start by replacing the ignition block. This can probably fix it. If it doesn't, you should check the ignition circuit backward to find the short.
