Radiator fan or AC fan? If its the radiator fan, you need first to check if its motor us OK. You can do this by hardwiring the electricl plug directly to the battery. Motor should run. If it doesn't, then this motor (fan) needs replacement.

If the motor runs fine when hardwiring, then you should have the car scanned for error codes. It is probably that the ECT (engine coolant temp sensor) is bad, thus the ECM never gets the signal "hey, I'm getting hot, turn on the radiator fan!"

The rotary control switch on the dash controls the blower motor for the A/C. The A/C will not turn on unless the blower motor is functioning properly. The passenger-side radiator fan will not turn on until the A/C begins running. BUT the driver's side radiator fan should always work. Ergo, check the function of the blower motor (located underneath the dash behind the glove box). Usually when it goes bad, it's because of the blower motor RESISTOR (mounted inside the blower motor housing). When the resistor goes bad, the blower motor shorts out, causing it to fail. The switch rarely ever fails. The radiator fan relays are located next to & on both ends of the radiator. Check them too. In the link, the blower motor RESISTOR is #5.

check the fan relays on the sides of the radiator. Check for right amount of antifreeze in radiator. Change the Thermostat (it's a pain to remove it, so you might as well change it with a new one). The driver's side radiator cooling fan should always work, and turns on-off according to engine temp. The passenger-side radiator cooling fan ONLY comes on when the A/C is running. IF it doesn't come on when the A/C is on, check the operation of the Blower motor (blows air out of your A/C vents). IF it doesn't work, check the Blower Motor RESISTOR (mounted inside the Blower Motor housing). See picture - RESISTOR is #5.

I turned on the ac and the light does not work, the vents are not blowing and the car is running hot. I have a saturn SL 1996


First check the 15 amp HVAC fuse located in the main fuse block inside the car on the passenger side of the center console, under a cover. If the fuse is good, then the problem may either be the HVAC blower switch (which is the fan blower selector switch), the fan blower motor resistor, or the fan blower motor. An auto repair manual will explain and illustrate for you the steps on how to check each of these components.

Even after pushing the ac light switch on, the fan blower selector switch has to be turned on as well (working) because it provides an electrical path to the positive side of the battery to complete the circuit and turn the ac light on. What the ac light switch does is provide the electrical path for the ac compressor clutch to come on through the ac control relay which is controlled by the car's PCM(computer) when you want ac, but the ac light switch still needs to run through the fan blower selector switch to receive its power. You can turn on the fan without the ac light switch because it gets its ground path(negative) from the blower motor. So the blower motor has to work in order to provide a ground path for the fan blower selector switch to be functional. You could have a faulty blower motor which is why no air blows through the vents. The fan blower motor is located inside the car on the passenger side underneath the dash at the bottom end of the glove compartment box. You'll see it. It's right above where a person rests their feet on the floor. Therefore, if your 15 amp HVAC fuse is good, check to see if you have voltage at the blower motor connector. Unclip the connector and with the ignition on and the fan blower switch moved to any one of the first 3 selections, check for voltage using a multimeter. The voltage will vary because there is a blower motor resistor. Voltage should be higher on setting 3 than 1. If you do have voltage at the blower motor connector, check for a faulty blower motor. The auto repair manual will tell you how to do it using jumper wires.

It's normal that your car is running hot because the radiator fan works in conjunction with your ac compressor. If the ac is on, the radiator fan will be on and therefore the engine coolant temperature will stay in it's normal operating range. If the ac is off, the radiator fan will stay off as well and the engine coolant temperature gauge will begin to rise and show pretty hot (especially at idle). It will do this up until a certain degree then the radiator fan should turn on thermostatically and stabilize the temperature. It's scary and I know what your saying because it does that to my car if my ac isn't on. Don't worry it won't overheat.

Your impala doesn't have a resistor , it has a blower motor control processor and it doesn't work the way you think it does

The blower motor speed control, battery positive voltage and ground circuits enable the control processor to operate. The HVAC control module provides a PWM signal to the control processor in order to command the blower motor speed. The processor supplies 12 volts to the blower motor through the blower motor voltage supply circuit. The control processor uses the blower motor ground as a low side control to adjust the blower motor speed.

If you have overheating problem, it can lead to multiple issues. You may be running on low coolant that's why the vehicle overheats. If that's the case, please add coolant and make sure that it sits on the right level, too much coolant can cause overheating too for coolant will overflow.


The vehicle may have a faulty or worn out radiator blower motor that's why it overheats. If that's the case then you will need a blower motor replacement to resolve the issue.


If the radiator is clogged with dirt and rusts this issue occurs too. The coolant doesn't flow normally on the cooling system if it's clogged. If that's the case, I strongly suggest that you have the radiator flushed to drain out dirt and rusts. If you think that the radiator served you enough then it's better to have it replaced.


Please do check the radiator hoses, If you have worn out hoses it can cause coolant leakage which can result to overheating. A tiny hole is good enough for the vehicle to overheat.


A faulty thermostat sensor can cause the issue too. If you have worn out thermostat, the fan may not trigger that's why the fan won't work when under stressed conditions. A blown radiator blower fuse can cause this issue too so I suggest that you check the radiator blower fuse and replace it when necessary. What causes the radiator blower fan fuse to blow? It's because of a failing radiator blower motor, If that's the case have the radiator blower fan motor replaced.

I have an issue with the fan sometimes it works an sometimes it will stay off till you hit a bump. how hard is it to replace the fan motor


It is probably easier than you think. Is like five screws and two wires its located on passanger side at feet, a new one comes with a new blade, when you look at the replacement you can tell which screws and wires to remove.

your electric cooling fan is not switching on that is either 1. you fan is bad which you can test jumping a hot wire to the pos side of the fan if it works then exclude it. 2. your fan works on a ground system there is a coolant fan switch in the head that can cause no fans, and the last 3. nfan relay or fuse bad

Heater/Air Conditioning Fan


Are you talking about the blower motor or the radiator fan? The blower motor is under the glove box in the circular black plastic cover. This is very easy to replace, a new one cost about $50 and just plugs right in. There is a 30 amp heater fuse in front over the driver seat under the dash. It's above all the other fuses, its black and rectangular. If that's not it it may be the blower motor

But if its your radiator fan its another ball game. First try the fuses and the relay in the fuse box under the hood, driverside. If thats not it, it could be the fan motor. f the fan motor is burnt out thats easy. Thats $130 for a new motor at the auto store and there are only 3 bolts that hold the radiator fan assembly in. Pull that out, change the motor out (3 more bolts) and put it back in, plug it in and your done.

If the problem is in the radiator fan and not the blower motor it could also be a busted thermostat. Not horrible, but if you have the 1.9 liter engine you have to take of the distributor, to get to it. New thermostat is $8.

I had to replace the blower motor and the ac worked better than great after. My recent problem is in the radiator fan. Not coming on at all. I replaced the motor, the relay, the fuses, the thermostat (was also broken), and the problem persists. This is a worst case senario. I think I have it narrowed down to a fusible link, but have to locate them.
