My 1997 Town Car, 4.6L, 144,000mi does not want to start mainly after sitting for a while particularly overnight. It cranks just fine. Sometimes it starts after continuous cranking for 10+ seconds. Though recently I've discovered that if I turn ignition on & off 4 or 5 times repeatedly, the car will always start immediately. After starting, the car runs smoothly without any problems the rest of the day. I've switched the fuel pump/ac relays but still same problem. I'm hoping is something less costly than the fuel pump. What do you think? Thank you. Charlie TX
Both, sometimes fill when half tank and sometimes when low. Recently, filled when low due to long trip. Only had fuel filter changed about 10 months ago. Haven't change any of the other parts you mentioned. But problem has manisfested itself since 3 weeks ago. Yes, I think I have run it low on gas recently, but I have done so in the past as well and had not experienced any problems until recently. It's hard to find a reputable professional, why today I got an estimate for $129.00 just to try & diagnose the problem. This is why I prefer to narrow it down to the least expensive parts first. Any hoot, thank you very much for your prompt responce to my inquiry.Dear FixYa Team member,

Fuel pump, EGR/DPFE or Injector Leakage are the only things that will cause this condition on a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, especially at that mileage point. Couple of questions that maybe you can answer for me - Do you normally run your gas tank all the way or most of the way to empty before filling it or do you always fill at at half a tank? Second, have you ever had your fuel filter, pump, pressure regulator or egr/egr sensors changed before now? Have you run it out of gas or very low on gas recently before this started? Think hard and answer honestly, it will only cost you more money if you try and hide the truth from a true technician. Couple of things you can do. 1st - Check your static fuel pressure at the rail, after the car has sat overnight. Then turn the key to "on". If the pressure builds gradually and not immediately, then you have a pump or regulator problem. If the pressure builds just find and it cranks repeatedly without starting, then more likely the injectors or egr system. If you can't answer the above questions with any amount of ceratiainty either because you don'nt know or don't remember, then save yourself the hassle of just throwing parts at it, hoping for an easy fix form semeone who can't physically inspect or diagnose the vehicle. Have it diagnosed by a professional that is reputable in your area. When you put your key in, don't turn it all the way but to the point where everything powers up. You should hear a hum from the lower rear that lasts about 3 seconds. That's the fuel pump. If you don't hear that, it could be the fuel pump.
I have read your problem. You can easily get the solution from the given link.Few days back i was also facing a problem in my car, and this site helps me a lot, it provides service manuals ,Do visit the given
link once http://toolsnyou.com/ .
first you need to test for spark if there is spark then check for fuel if there iis no spark have your ignition module ckecked for fuel take the lifuel line off from fuel tank to fuel lilter it is not difficult.
Cranks and starts are two different things. If it cranks but won't start it could be loosing fuel pressure overnight. If it won't crank in the morning, you could have a bad cell in the battery or something draining the battery overnight. Such as the interior lights coming on and off. The light problem could be the door ajar sensor in the door latch.
does it crank or turn over y/n
if it cranks over change the pickup coil/ignition control moduel if it doesn't crank check the battery cables / alternator / if it sets overnight and starts in the morning the battery is good
I would check the air gap on the drive to driven plate of the ac compressor clutch, it should be no more than 0.30 thousanths of an inch, if it is excessive you can have this problem, check it with a hot engine, if it is excessive you can adjust it with a special shim kit from the dealer.
