2001 Ford Explorer won't start. When you turn the ignition you get the "clicking" and nothing else. I have not tried replacing the battery or "jumping" the battery to see if this would work. I don't know if the starter is bad or if its the battery. Before I start replacing things I wanted to know what to do first.

When u try to start the engine, do the lights on the dash board turn off and come back when u release the key. If the do the battery connections are loose or the battery needs charge. If u start the engine and the lights don't turn off they stay lit something is wrong with the starter or the relay for the starter not working

First try a jump start, if the vehicle starts easily then your battery was dead. This happens for multiple reasons. Have your battery and alternator tested at your local autoparts store (typically they do it for free all you have to do is take the vehicle to them in running condition). If it does not start with a jump then the starter is most likely the problem.

Clicking when trying to start a vehicle usually means that the battery is dead. try jump starting it and see what that does. if it starts it could mean a bad battery or bad alternator. both can be checked on the vehicle at most auto parts stores

SOURCE: 2002 ford explorer wont start even after new battery...

Before you go changing out the starter check for a burnt out fusible link going to the starter it will look like a wire but acts as a fuse and they burn in two just like a fuse. The symptoms you just describe are those of a burnt fusible link.

SOURCE: ignition or starter

Check the neutral safety switch. If it is defective or out of adjustment it will prevent you from starting the vehicle with the key.

SOURCE: Have a 98 ford explorer

it could very well be the starter solinoid mounted on fender under hood. most fords are setup this way. to test it -- You could use jumper cable to jump the two large studs on the solenoid together, which should make the starter crank the engine, assuming the engine can rotate freely. If jumping the solenoid works, then the solinoid is probably bad. have a good day !!

It sounds like a fault in the starter circuit. It could be a defective neutral safety switch, starter solenoid, or possible a defective ignition switch but I doubt it. Can you hear the starter solenoid??? I'm willing to bet the problem is either with starter relay, neutral safety switch, or starter solenoid.

MY 98 FORD EXPLORER CRANKS BUT DOES NOT TURN OVER. I HAVE POWER BUT MY VEHICLE WON'T START

You mean that the starter is turning (cranks) the engine but the engine won't start? Be sure it is getting fuel. Turn the key to the on position and you should hear the fuel pump in the fuel tank run for a few seconds. If so that is good. If the fuel is being delivered then possibly you have no spark which usually is the electronic ignition module. The only way to test it is to replace it. Your timing chain or belt could be broken or "jumped" as the third possibility. I am leaning toward ignition module being bad as they just die without warning and nothing can revive them.

96 ford explorer wont start. all power when turn key. nothing.

if it turns over from below, then its in the ignition switch and this also feeds power to the e.c.m. to make the engine fire so you either have a bad switch contact or the hot 12 volt wire to the ignition switch
