What does a crankshaft sensor do? what does a camshaft sensor do?

get a HAYNES repair manual, tells you what all sensors do ! the crankshaft sensor sends info to the SBEC, reguarding engine crankshaft position. the camshaft sensor reads camshaft position, sends a coded signal to the SBEC, which uses this info to determine whether the fuel injectors and ignition coils are correctly synchronized !

Changed crankshaft sensor, started fine & test drive ok. sat for 3-4 hrs & would not start check engine light on with fault code 340

That code, 340 is No camshaft signal being received by the computer. Might just be the CAMshaft sensor, not the CRANKshaft sensor, that's bad.

I have a 99 mercury villager, getting a 0340 code. it says its for a crankshaft sensor but vehicle doesn't have one. What does this code mean?

Hi, code 340 is for the camshaft sensor. Below is a test you can run to check the sensor. The PCM is above the glovebox. Do not disconnect or remove the PCM. Just remove the glove box and probe the back of the connector to access the pins indicated in the cam sensor test. Please let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

1999-00 Vehicles

On 1999-00 vehicles, the camshaft position sensor must be checked with the engine running. If a no start condition is encountered, observe the MIL. With the ignition switch on and the engine off, the MIL should be illuminated. If the camshaft position sensor is functioning, the MIL should go out when cranking the engine.
  1. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature. Leave the engine running.
  2. Using a voltmeter set to the DC range, connect the negative lead of a voltmeter lead to the negative battery terminal or chassis ground.
  3. Connect the positive voltmeter lead to the back of the PCM electrical connector in terminal 44.

  1. Observe the voltmeter reading. The reading should be 0.3-0.5 volts.
  2. Disconnect the positive voltmeter lead from terminal 44, and connect it to terminal 49.
  3. Observe the voltmeter reading. The reading should be approximately 2.5 volts.
  4. Perform steps 3 through 6 with the engine at 2,000 rpm with the transaxle in park. The voltage readings should be the same.
  5. If the observed voltages are not within specifications, the sensor may be faulty.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
The camshaft position sensor is part of the distributor assembly, and must be replaced as a unit. Please refer to Engine Electrical, Distributor Ignition System, Distributor, Removal and Installation for the procedure.

Removal & Installation 3.1L Engine To Remove:
CMP sensor 93174g24.gif

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. Remove the power steering pump and set aside with the lines connected.
  3. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.
  4. Remove the CMP mounting bolt.
  5. Remove the CMP sensor.
  6. Check the O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.
To Install:
NOTE: Lubricate the O-ring with clean engine oil.
  1. Install the camshaft position sensor.
    • Tighten the mounting bolt to 89 in lb (10 Nm).
  2. Connect the CMP sensor electrical connector.
  3. Install the power steering pump.
3.4L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Detach the electrical connector from the camshaft position sensor.
  3. Remove the sensor retainer bolt and carefully pull the sensor from the camshaft carrier. An O-ring seal may hold the sensor in place. Use care not to lose the O-ring.

To Install:
  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2. Before installing a replacement camshaft sensor, lubricate the new O-ring with clean engine oil.
    • Tighten the bolt to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Do not over-tighten.
  3. Connect the negative battery cable.
3.8L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Detach the electrical connector from the camshaft position sensor. Camshaft Position Sensor removal (3.8L engines) 93174g26.gif

  3. Remove the retaining screw and separate the sensor from the front cover.
To Install:
  1. Installation the sensor in the front cover.
  2. Tighten the bolt to just 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm). Do not over-tighten. Verify the electrical connector is secure.

P0320 & P1391 OBD codes displayed, found during emissions testing but there are NO engine or driving problems idicated.

P 0320 = No Crank Reference Signal to PCM. No Crank (shaft position) reference signal detected during engine cranking (starting).
P 1391 =Intermittent Loss of either Camshaft Position Sensor or Crankshaft Position Sensor.
Hav you attemtped the "3-Key-Ons" method to see these codes on your digital Odometer (assuming you have one) Turn the Key from Off to On (not start) three (3) times. On the third (3rd) time leave the Key in the "On" position (not start). Look at your Dogotal Odometer (if so equipped). The Codes, one at a time should appear. The Last Code will be "P donE".
If te engine is performing without problems: disconnect the negative side of the Battery and wait at least 5 to 30 minutes. Reconnect the Battery. Re-preform the 3-Key-On's and see if and Codes are now showing.
If you start having Start or Running problems becoming more and more frequent: consider replacing the Crankshaft Position Sensor. If this sensor "fails" you may not get any fire to anything, as this is the signal that is necessary for the PCM to initiate the Firing Sequence. The PCM will not send a signal to even the Ignition Coil to begin.
