Rattling noise while accerlating 08 Subaru Outback

I purchased my very first new car last year. For the first 3000 miles all was good. Then noticed a rattle when I would lightly press on the gas peddle. It only seems to do it when its really cold or really hot. I took it in for my first oil change and the mechanic they didn't hear it. A friend of mine heard it and said it sounded like a valve rattle. Its never consistant. I took it back in, and then was told that it was just the noise that the car makes. It got worse to where Id come to a stop at a light and when I would go people would look. Took it back in and had the mechanic test drive with me, he said he thought it was gas related. They had the car for a week seemed ok...Couple days later same thing...took it back in for another week, they said it was a hickup. By bf got an 09, 3 months ago just hit 3000 miles his is now doing it and I am still getting the run around on mine. The noise is annoying and should not be happening to brand new cars....Help!!!

Have you inquired about possible knock sensor faulty? Notice it more on a hill, or moderate acceleration?

It is very hard to give you a reliable answer without knowing or hearing the noise for myself. I would take it to another local shop for a real mechanic to listen to the noise. It really ticks me off that the parts changers you have dealt with are so Un-helpful. When working on a Subaru they should have more respect for the customer. Anyway, I would take it to a shop in your area to allow another person to hear the noise. If you give me your area, I will suggest a shop in your area that maybe better at diagnosing your problem.

Can a 2001 Subaru Outback take an aftermarket stock clutch or do you have to go with a Subaru clutch only? fighting clutch chatter two clutches in two months after orignal clutch lasted 130k miles?

Get a new clutch kit AND flywheel. Don't turn a flywheel more than once, just like with brake rotors. Any car can use an aftermarket clutch replacement (as long as they fit, of course). If you get a lightened flywheel, you'll enjoy better acceleration and mileage (city driving) as well.

My odometer is 110,000 that a subaru 2008 outback is that bad,i bought only last week

  • Not to bad. Outback is a good vehicle. With so many miles and it only being a 2008 I am inclined to think this was a highway traveled vehicle more than in town. This is good because highway miles is far better on a vehicle than in town miles. Some maintenance you need to either confirm has been done or inspected to see if it needs to be done. May also have some warranty with it to but warranties often do not cover preventative maintenance.
  1. Transmission flush - 20,000 miles
  2. Transmission Filter - 50,000 miles
  3. Radiator flush. - 30,000 miles
  4. Air filter. - As needed.
  5. Oil change. - 3 months or 3,000 miles - usually right away with new vehicle.
  6. Emissions clean. - 25,000 miles
  7. Brake inspection. Right away with new vehicle.
  8. Serpentine belt - 50,000 miles inspect often.
  9. Alignment check - Check is often free.
  10. Tires.

First of all, is it still under warranty? It sounds like water or oil in the exhaust. could be several issues, are you losing any oil or water. And yes this is a signal that there is a problem. Take it back to the dealer. You should have at least a five year 60k mile powertrain warranty.

2000 Subaru Outback Wagon (100K miles) with P0420 Code

I do not know for sure if this is the problem you are having, But, I have noticed that from 95 up to 2002 I have seen a lot of PO420 codes that have been just the sensor. I do not know if it was a weak sensor or just that program telling it that it is below threshold. I did notice that if the vehicles are run for a long trip at highway speed it goes out. I wish you luck and have a great day.

If the engine or sound of the engine gets louder then I would look into whether the wheel or steering rods have mannaged to damage or loosen the exhaust system. The exhaust should have very little to no movement between the CAD and exhaust manifold on the engine. Beyond that the steerng mechanism should never have any effect on the performance, or sound of an engine. Look for holes, misplacement or looseness in the exhaust system.
