Additionally if this noise is heard only with the vehicle in motion you should check your wheelbearings as worn wheelbearings can give off a grinding noise when making a turn. In this case the noise you are hearing may not be related to the actual steering components themselves.

Hi

If you have replaced the powersteering pump and this is not a used pump - the problem is suspect within the steering rack itself.

It is important also to check that you have bled all air out of the system when the fluid was replaced. To do this take the lid off the powersteering reservoir tank and turn the steering all the way left and right for 8 turns. Check and top up fluid as necessary.

Also ensure you are using the correct grade of fluid for your vehicle.

If the noise persists after these checks - suspect steering rack at fault.

Hope this helps. Please remember to rate my answer. Thanks.

Whats it mean when I hear a grinding noise when I steer either way?

it indicates that when the pump gears are placed under pressure /load that they are interfering with the pump housing or are not being held in the correct mesh situation
the situation of powers steering that when in the relaxed position ( no steering wheel movement) the valves are so placed that the oil is by passed straight back to the reservoir but any movement of the wheel closes those valves and diverts the oil to the cylinder/actuator and so power assists the steering
AT this point is when load is applied to the pump and the noise is heard
I would suggest that the pump be removed and inspected for wear on the idler gear shaft, wear on the tips of the teeth from contact with the housing
Mostly the best fix is a replacement pump because it the clearance between the teeth and the housing is excessive or scored then the full pressure will not be achieved

When your power steering pump goes out does it lock up your steering wheel

I doubt it.
Usually when the pump fails it smokes the belt.
If the steering wheel will not turn and the fluid is contaminated, I would say the problem is the gear box or rack and pinion depending on the make model and year.

Power steering making a whirring noise

If it is making the noise when turning the wheel while stationary or parallel parking, then the fluid level may be low.

If it is not low then the pump itself is wearing out if it has a grinding noise.

Changing the power steering pump is recommended.

Good luck on this repair.

1998 for windstar gl..grinding noise in steering

i don't think it is the pump. The pump would generally make a noise all the time because the motor's belt is what powers your power steering pump. Sometimes you will hear it bog down the motor when it is being turned all the way to one side or the other but that sould be about it. The grinding you described sounds like a rack and pinion problem and not anything to do with the pump itself. I hope im wrong because rack and pinion fixes are much more expensive and time comsuming to repair
