Problem for Volkswagen 1997 Passat

Car doesnt shift out of first and has no reverse or neutral gear.

1985 chevy caprice.
bought it at the auction and was wrecked in the front end. transmission fluid good. drove it home and didnt shift out of first. also the shift in my dash is stuck in park but car shifts to drive, and only drive, has no reverse or neutral. could the accident casue the transmission to fail? or can it be the tcu (transmission control unit) or a cable?
