Question about 2004 Mercury Mariner

Gear shifter for 40 h. p. mariner outboard

I removed the lower unit on my 40 horse, 1986 mariner outboard, to repair the water pump. When I replace the l. u. the gears hang up and I can't free them without removing the lower unit again. I would appreciate your advice. Thanks

With your lower unit off have someone shift the engine into forward while watching the gear shift select shaft's rotation,let gearshift remain in forward,now place your lower unit in forward and reinstall. In the future just put engine in forward when installing a water pump as there won't be a need to move gearshift

I have a late 70s 28hp Mariner Outboard, appears shift linkage has broken just below the motor where it connects to the rod that goes to the foot. How do I repair it with out moving the motor?


talk with a mariner service center
get a workshop manual for the outboard
with many outboards the selection rod comes apart with the bottom section as if you were replacing a water pump
see if you can undo the top section and let it fall out the bottom or lift the broken section out past the motor
talk wit a service center first and get some ideas

How to replace water pump on a 1985 90 hp mariner outboard motor


mcdevito75 Here, If I;m not mistaken the water pump is in the lower houseing, a big job, let the marina take care of it as the water pump should be Changed only if it doesn"t pump at all.

Overheating to my mariner 200 outboard enging


I would start with cleaning water intake and if you haven't re placed water pump impeller in last two years would do so now ,before you lose a weekend off the water,Hope this helped .

I have a 86 mustang that was stuck in first adrives just in first now all gears work. it now just pops out of first now

Sorry to hear your having problems.
The most likely problem is you have a bent shift fork inside the transmission.
You can either go used or try to rebuild it.
You can try this as well.
1 - either block the wheels from turning or put the emergency brake on.
2- put the standard shift in neutral
3 pull the plastic ring around the shifter up.
3 remove the cover
4 - remove the four bolts holding the inner cover off
5 -remove the shifter bolts [4]
6-put an old towel down to cover the seats and other areas -
7 pull GENTLY and CAREFULLY until the entire shift mechanism comes lose.
8 - check and have someone else check to see that the shifter is straight and not bent. The bottom part of the shifter with the knob looking unit on it - should be straight down from the shifter that you use to shift the gears. If this is bent - I would get an after market shifter - or you can replace with a factory shifter.

Reverse the above directions to complete the job.
If nothing is bent -then you must rebuild or replace the transmission.

I have a Mariner outboard engine which requires the water pump to be removed for repair. The gear shift linkage once disconnected from the oprating lever will not pass through the casing in the engine...


In order to disconnect the gearshift linkage from the gearshift operating handle, a safety clip was rotated about 90 degrees clockwise. Once in this position, if you pull the safety clip towards you, it comes completely out, which then permits the gearshift rod to seperate from the operating lever.
