Question about 2001 Volkswagen Golf

1 Answer

Windshield wipers on 2001 VW Golf move very slowly

When windshield wipers are activated via the right stalk control they move very slowly, get stuck in one spot and move only when prodded. Without the resistance of the windshield they still move slowly. The speed control settings do not make a difference. I checked under the hood to see if the control arms were being impeded or off and everything appears to be normal.

Wipers sticking in upright position on 1999 vw passat

It sounds like they are in the "service position" If memory serves correctly do this to get them out of the service position:

Service position To get into service position:
  • After you turn your car off, tap the wiper stalk down. The wipers will move into the service position.
To get out of service position:
  • To move the wipers back, switch on the ignition and tap the wiper stalk down.

How do i find the right fuse that is connected to windshield wipers 2001 isuzu rodeo?

If they try to move the fuse is not the issue, You need to check the linkages, they are under the panel where the wiper spindles sit, the plastic ends can break and stop them working.

How to check & change a wiper motor, and repair wiper mechanism on 2001 VW Golf

First time you must diagnose why windscreen wipers going slow and/or stopping.
In order to find out the cause of wipers stopping you can try follows:

1. Carefully extract the wiper arms from their axles (two pieces). In some cases you need to use an extracting tool. Heed of the windscreen !!!
2. Disassemble the plastic covers from the bottom of the windscreen.
3. With the bonnet up you can start the engine, (transmission in "N" or "P" position and parking brake on). Now you must switch on the control lever of the wipers, and go to the engine compartment. If the wiper motor runs let the wiper motor running for a few minutes and switch off. Go to the step 4. If the wiper motor do not runs you must check first the electrical feeding of the motor. If the electrical feeding is OK you must replace the motor - steps 5, 6. If not, you must check electrical connections, the control switch of wipers and harness.
4. Now you must check the two bearings of wiper mechanism with your hand. In the most cases the left bearing is out of order (is very hot). This is the most encounter fault of the wipers running.
5. You must disconnect the electrical coupling of the motor (difficult assurance), unscrew three bolts of the mechanism and extract together with the motor. You must move them slowly between windscreen and engine computer box until the wiper motor go out together with the mechanism. This is the most difficult operation!
6. Now you can repair the bearings, replace entire wiper mechanism or replace the wiper motor. It is not very simply, but it works.
Heed of the windscreen !!!
Refit all in reverse order.

If it was the relay, they would not work at all. There is a speed control for the wipers that controls the speed and delay (not the switch in the steering wheel), call the dealer to see if it is a separate module or integrated into the motor (if it is the later, you'll need a rebuilt/new unit).

Hope this helps.

This sounds like the wiper control module. Most of these are a module attached to the wiper motor but are replaceable seperate from the wiper transmisson.

The wiper motor on my 1983 Ford Ranger still works but the wipers no longer move. I think there is a failure of the mechanical linkage. Where do I go to find repair parts?

why do you think the motor still works if the wipers don't move? Can you hear the motor run or can you see a little movement when you turn the switch on?

What happens when you activate the washers?

go to a salvage yard that allows you to remove the parts yourself. Then you can see how the motor and linkage assembly comes out.

don't have 1983 info, but here is 1994:

Section 01-16A: Wiper and Washer System, Ranger/Explorer 1994 Ranger and Explorer Vehicles Workshop Manual
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Windshield Wiper System, Ranger/Explorer The windshield wipers are actuated by a permanent magnet, rotary-type electric windshield wiper motor (17504) . The two windshield wiper pivot arms (17526) and windshield wiper blades (17528) are mounted on a pivot shaft, one at each side of the windshield. The windshield wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft (17566) are connected to the motor by windshield wiper adapter and connecting arm clip (17531) . Ranger and Explorer vehicles are equipped with an interval wiper and washer (IWW) system featuring a lever-type turn signal and windshield wiper switch (13K359) mounted on the steering column. The IWW windshield wiper governor (17C476) uses a relay contact to control current to the windshield wiper motor . The governor electronic circuitry controls the contact to supply current to windshield wiper motor . A rear wiper/washer system is available on Explorer vehicles. The rear window wiper system consists of a windshield wiper motor mounted inside the liftgate (40010) , an articulating windshield wiper pivot arm and windshield wiper blade , a windshield wiper/washer switch (17A553) and an inline circuit breaker. The front electric windshield washer system consists of a control switch, integral with the turn signal, a windshield washer reservoir (17618) and windshield wiper motor and the necessary windshield washer hoses (17A605) , windshield washer nozzle jet and brackets (17603) and attaching parts.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301).
  1. Remove the right pivot nut and allow the windshield wiper adapter and connecting arm clip to drop into the cowl top outer panel .
  1. Remove the linkage access cover, located on the right side of the dash panel near the windshield wiper motor.
  1. Reach through the access cover opening and unsnap the wiper motor clip.

  1. Install the right windshield wiper adapter and connecting arm clip onto the wiper motor crank pin. Pull the windshield wiper adapter and connecting arm clip onto the crank pin until it snaps into place. The clip is properly installed if the nib is protruding through the center of the clip.
  1. Install the right windshield wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft and nut. Tighten the nut to 9.5-12.5 Nm (84-110 in-lb). NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650) relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 10 miles or more to relearn the strategy.
  1. Connect the battery ground cable and turn the ignition switch on. Turn turn signal and windshield wiper switch off so windshield wiper motor will park, then turn ignition switch off. Replace right windshield wiper adapter and connecting arm clip access cover.
  1. Install the windshield wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft and windshield wiper blade assemblies on the pivot shafts to dimension X. Dimension X is the distance between the centerline of the blade saddle and the top edge of the cowl top outer panel grille. The value of Dimension X for each vehicle is given in the Dimension X chart in the Specifications portion of this section.
  1. Test the system.

2001 VW Golf Windshield Wipers

You will need to pull the wiper arm off the shaft. The gears on the shafts are most likely worn out. Have you tried to use the wipers when they where stuck or frozen down?
You can buy a tube of JB weld or even better yet JB Underwater Weld. Put a good amount on both shafts and replace wiper arms and secure them down. Wait a couple days at LEAST before using wipers again to ensure that the weld product holds and cures.

Where is the switch for my 1997 VW Golf rear windsheild wiper? I just bought it and I can't find it...

The switch for the rear wiper is on the actual windshield wiper switch for the front wipers, you have to push the lever forward to turn it on and then again to turn it off, to use the washer fluid for the rear wiper you push the same lever forward and hold it there till the washer fluid comes out.

take out the bolt out of the wiper arm and check the spline, if the spline appears to be worn out, replace the wiper arm and tighten it. take caution in tightening the bolt for you might crack the windshield. goodluck!
