Question about 1991 Ford Tempo 4 Door

2 Answers

I have a 1991 Ford Tempo and after about 20 minutes of driving the engine will shut off and the RPM will drop to zero. In addition the charging system Amp light and Oil light are both illuminated when the engine shuts off. The alternator and battery are brand new so I am confused why the Amp light illuminates. As for the oil I'm certain there is too much in the engine, but I am under the impression that too much oil in the engine is not the entirety of the problem.

RPM,AMP,OIL will come on when the engine either stalls or stops running thus all normal... you need to first find out if it is A) a fuel problem B) an spark problem fuel look at fuel filter and pump spark look at electronic module

When the engine shuts off will the car restart? what happens next? You have a new battery and alternator this is good,I think you have a wire problem change the alternator wireing harness the black with the orang stripe usually is burned up inside.replacing them probably will fix your problem, check to see if your car is charging on a tester at a garage, even if it passes goning down the road can make a difference.

When the engine stalls, the amp & oil light always come on. That is not a probelem. It's supposed to do that.

Check these things:

Ignition switch recall completion. Call any Ford delaer with your 17 digit VIN number to see if this recall has been done. If not, they will do it for free. 95S28 - Safety Recall - Ignition Switch Replacement.

TFI ignition module on distributor could be going bad when hot.

Fuel pump could be going. Check for 35-40 PSI at idle.
Don't have too much oil in engine as it will splash and foam and engine will fail.

1991 geo prism brake and battery came on while driving for few minutes then went off what's it trying to tell me?

the battery is really charge failure.
but happens normally under 2 ways.
1: motor stalls, (car have M/T or A/T)
2: motor RPM drops real low, to like 500rpm or less. near stall.
and generator (alt) drops off line.
all normal, next time , look at RPM of engine when the lamps come on and that tells you what is happening.
buy a tachmeter, if no dash tach opted.
or use a mech. tach and use it while driving.

I have a 1991 honda accord lx and one day while driving my RPM gauge started to move back and forth rapidly, it dropped down to zero and my car shut off. i changed the fuel filter and my car was driving...

a dirty or faulty MAF sensor can cause proplems like this. try cleaning it with CRC MAF cleaner you can get it at just about any autoparts store. the MAF is located on the air intake disconnect the electrical connection and remove the sensor be careful not to damage the fragile filaments inside. there is no need to wipe it just spray it clean and let air dry be sure to spray all parts plug, filaments everything

This may been an ignition module or a MAF sensor, this car may need to be diagnosed using a OBD I computer code reader to accurately diagnose the problem.
