Engine stalls while driving and sometimes while idling.

Does not run rough prior to stalling, but just acts as if I turned the key to off, then starts right back up again. The ck.engine light came and Autozone code # P0100 and PO115. ..Also, If A/C is not running it does not stall...at least not yet.

Also P0100...Mass Air Flow Sensor....Do both of these problems cause symptoms as described above? Do I need to replace the Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit sensor and the MAF sensor?

  • garynmichell Jul 23, 2009

Sometimes when when trying to restart the car the A/T oil temp light flashes and then turns off. It never comes on while driving though.

The stalling problem could be caused by a faulty mass airflow sensor. That is the PO100 code. The other code is for the engine coolant temperature sensor. Go to the autozone website at autozone .com and register your vehicle. It's free and you will have access to an online repair manual. The procedures for testing the MAF sensor is outlined there. Hope this helps and you find a resolution to your problem. Best wishes.

The stalling symptom seems more likely to be caused by a faulty MAF sensor. I would replace it first and have the fault codes scanned again to see if the engine coolant circuit fault code reoccurs, then make a decision on how you want to proceed. Are you having any cooling issues with the vehicle?

You need to replace the mass airflow sensor. i had this just happen to me. you wil be better off getting one at a junkyard rather than buying it from like autozone or napa.

Stalls after start up, Stalls when braking, then runs fine after a few minutes

If it stalls when the brake lights come on then the idle is too slow. The high amps of the lights will load down the engine and lowers the idle.

Sometimes that's caused by a vacuum leak near the manifold area.

Sometimes air in the coolant will cause an idle problem. Air will keep the air temp sensor from sending proper info.
Hope this helps.

89 chevy celebrity stalls when turning

Do the following service it should help the stall out.

Engine stalling and rough run issue at low speeds

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control

I have a 1998 mercury tracer it has been giving me alot of problems latley i am planning on getting ready to buy a new car in febuary but i need this one to last a little longer the car runs ok but...

You can in most cases repair this slow speed stall or unstable idle by cleaning the engine throttle valve and the idle speed control valve using a product called CRC Spray Throttle valve cleaner. Spray the cleaner into the air intake of the engine with the hose removed from the throttle body, the engine will try to stall so hold up the idle speed manually. Once you have used up about 1/2 can of the cleaner stall the engine out while spraying and turn the key off, disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 minutes and then reconnect and drive the car for a about 25 miles of varied driving modes. If this doesn't cure the problem you may need the fuel injectors professionally cleaned by the dealer service dept.

Low idle

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
