Just did it. Put new fluid...and didn´t work.
Does it mean I have to open the transmission???? Where to buy clutch pack and bands ? Sorry, but I live in Brazil and my van is the only one in town (can you imagine my situation?).

  • deborasberna Jul 23, 2009

Does anybody know if there is an external hose, pipe or valve that can obstruct the pressure?

I am trying to find the mechanic to answer the color/smell question but he is out of the office, will come back in 1 hr... My van is at the mechanic since last January - first because the 2 to 3 gear was not working... I had 1st gear ok , then had to be on high speed to get it changed ... then mechaninc saw an oil leakage at gasket - we replaced all gaskets and the gears are now working perfect ... but could not fix the reverse. As I mentioned to you, nobody knows the van...

  • deborasberna Jul 23, 2009

The mechanic just called me - he said the color was dark (black) and smells like burnt stuff. He did change the fluid but not the filter. He cleaned up very well the filter and mentioned there was a lot of dusty in it...

Yes it means the clutch pack or seal is out and has to come out and apart you can buy a rebuild kit for $150.00 thats all seals clutches and bands and you would need help in order to rebuild it, the rebuilding would take 8 hours for a trained mechanic and 2.5 to 3 hours to get it out and back in again. If you need the information on where to buy parts and have them shipped I can help you out on that part. yo will need some inner and outter snap ring plyers to do it. and if you let it go to long you will damage the output shaft and that gets real epensive. was the fluid brown and smelled like onions? Hey by the way rate me since I am giving you all this free info.if you get me in a live chat I can give you all the things you will need to know and how to do everything.

The way the transmisson is designed the reverse and first gear works on one shaft and if that clutch pack goes it's done, you could try changing the transmisson oil and filter and maybe it might work but this is a problem with a band or a seal, there are no pipes it's all machined in the housing and the valve body, there is one other possiblity but I dout it's the problem if the linkage were loose at the shift linkage at the trasmisson or was bent it is possible that it would not shift in reverse but that is not that likely, and you did not say whay the fluid looked like or if it smelled with onions and I answerd you again cause you rated me thank you.

it means it's toast and it has to have the filter changed or it won't work at all so change the filter but the transmisson is shot this I can garentee you. you will need a rebuild kit for sure. c-ya

you can e-mail Lauren@fixya.com and tell her you want to e-ail me andI said it's ok I will give you the prices for a rebuilttransmisson and shipping cost, I think it would be cheeper and since your mechanic did not know to change the filter then I recommend yo buy a bolt up trasmisson, about $450.00 for a rebuil so let her know and I will get back to you. I need to know the modle of the transmisson the vin Number and maunfacture date in order to get everything for you and it will take about 2 weeks for standard shiping. ok c-ya.

I think the best bet for you would to buy a good used transmisson and have it shipped to you, unless the shop is very clean has no dirt you could ruin the transmisson when rebuilding it anyway post the vechicle make here and the year and modle size of engine and type of transmisson 3 or 4 speed or 3 speed with overdrive. Then I will look for prices for kit or for a unit already good but used.

Sounds like you dont wnat to hear the truth.Use your common sense if it goes forwards and not backwards, the only thing that makes it work is the transmission.

How do you remove the fuel pump on a 1990 Chevy Lumina APV?

The fuel pump is in the gas tank. Drive off or siphon out as much gas as you can. You will need to remove the filler hose. Drop the tank and remove the fuel lines on the top of the tank, Turn the ring counter clock wise that holds the siphon and pump in. Once the ring is loose, lift the the siphon and pump assembly out of the tank. The pump is on the bottom of the siphon. Replace, then reverse the process.
