Question about Chevrolet Impala

My car will not start after it heats up untill it cools down

My car will not start after it's been driven around town and turned off to go inside a store. If you change your mind and try and start the car in just a few min. after it was turned off it will not start. If you wait for 15 to 30 min. it will start again. To me some thing is over heated and needs to cool down. But what could it be? I have not had any trouble lights come on to help diagnoise this problem. Can any one help me out?

I believe it has 120000 to 150000 miles. I do not see any antifreez. I will need to check the fan for you. The last question how do you find out? Can you see this foam on the dip stick?

How many miles on this engine? are you loosing antifreez?does your engine fan work? and do you have water in your oil,or white foam looking stuff? It sounds like you have a blown head gasket,Have your cylinders checked for compression, this will let you know if your in need of a head gasket job.

When the car is driven and motor gets hot the car shuts down but when it cools down it starts and runs fine again until it gets hot

IT is most likely the thermastat but i would not suggest driving it until it fixed as that could cause the head to crack witch costs around $213 - $250

Hard starting

it could be an electrical problem.. temperature sensors may tell the engine its getting too hot and wont let it start until its completely cool.. you may need the sensors changed because they are giving false readings.. but the best thing you could do is to take your car to your nearest garage soon in case it turns out to be a serious problem.

How to complete drive cycle for a 1997 Mitsubishi Montero SR

You will need to do a 2 trip monitor drive cycle. What this means it needs to see 2 cold start up, from 60 F to operating temperature of 210F.and driven around town, for at least 15 minutes, then shut down for at least 5 minutes then driven again. Each manufacture has a precise way of doing this monitor set, from my experience go around town, your a 1997 the only monitor you dont have to set is evap.Simply explained just drive it

Car over heats up hills and long trips fine around town recently head done & thermostate no sign of water leak have only seen 1 of 2 radiator fans working

check which of the fans is running it could be the one for the airconditioning thats turning and that would explain why it over heats around town because there is no cold air to cool it and there is when you are driving on long trips

2001 oldsmobile silhouette will not crank after.........

does the temp gauge or light come on? is the car over heating? .... oh and a starter can test fine when its cold, but the heat soak from the engine and exhaust affect it's performance drastically. it sounds like you need a new starter.

Radiator fan runs when engine is off

some cars do start up the fan when turned off after they have been driven. as long as it is not starting when the engine is cold there is nothing to worry about. the reason it took 15 mins to shut off is that with the engine not running the water is not being pumped
round the engine thus cooling faster. hope this helps

A/C air flow problem

AC works as so..

It does not actually cool the air, however it removes the heat from it (and without heat the air feels cool). As the air is blown around the car the AC system removes the heat from the air, and then it moves it to the condenser at the front of the car (infront of the radiator).

Now usually the car is moving forward, so that air flow will cool the condenser and then you can move more heat from the air inside the car and push it out the front of the car again. This is why, if you have a front wheel drive car, you will hear the cars fan start as soon as you turn the AC on.

Also the car will be much better at cooling the air that is recirculating inside the car (your a/c system will have a button for this) then if it tries to cool hot air from outside.

The long and short of it is that if you hop in a hot car, start the car and run the ac (even at full) it wont be cool straight away, it is mostly influenced by how much you are driving forward.

Try this. Start the car, turn the AC to recirculate the air, turn the AC on and go for a drive for 10 mins, pull over and wind down the window. Compare the outside air to the inside air, then you will see the difference.
