Several things could cause this. If the refrigerant charge is low the a/c compressor clutch will not stay engaged, causeing it to kick out and cycle prematurely. A pressure switch could be faulty. Your climate control switch may be faulty...Haveing a certified tech. check the pressure readings...would be a good place to start.
Good luck...hope this helps.

THE AC MAY HAVE A LEAK AND IS LOW ON CHARGE, THE COMMON REASON FOR THIS IS A LEAKING CONDENSOR CORE AND THE AC LINE "O" RINGS LEAKING.

Winndscreen does not clear unless have air conditioner on

Blowing air across the windscreen does not necessarily clear away condensate from the inside. Water vapor condenses on any cool surface, and humid air blowing across a cool windscreen will result in more condensate on the windscreen. Often the air that blows across the windscreen is just humid AND heated, and doesn't solve the problem.
The air conditioner system performs two functions. Not only does it cool the air, it also extracts moisture, resulting in dryer air. Once the dried air is re-heated in the defroster system, it should allow the moisture on the windscreen to evaporate.
In other words, it sounds as though the defroster system is functioning properly.

Ac cools for sort time then blows warm air

I have a 98 ext. cab with AC, it was a low charge on mine. An O-ring was leaking. good luck, the O-ring set is cheap. I think it was autozone that carried them.

1998 gmc sonoma air conditioner - not cold

Check the magnetic clutch is engaged on front of a/c pump, have the motor running, a/c on and fan on high, if the centre hub is static the pump in not switched on, this can happen when the gas pressure gets low.

Is the fan running with A/C on at idle? If yes try blowing out the radiator and condenser with compressed air.
