Question about 2008 Pontiac Vibe

Serpentine belt hissing sound

I have a 2003 pontiac vibe and the serpentine belt is making a loud hissing sound. I purchased some belt dressing spray however it has not helped. Are thier other "do it your self things" I could do to make it quite?

NOTE: I have looked at the belt and it is not damaged however it does have some hair line cracks in it.

Hissing sound on startup

A hissing noise is an indication of a vacuum leak ( probably in the manifold ) as I think as the manifold heats up the noise is lost because the gasket is now sealing off

Squeking in front of the motor on the car

It could be your serpentine belt. Road tar can get into the groves of the belt and cause sticking to the pulleys which will translate into a squeaking or chirp sound. To check, with the engine running use a spray lubricant (not water and above all not belt dressing. The dressing will only make matters worse) If the sound go'es away that is your problem.

I replaced the altenator and the serpentine belt two weeks ago. Now i hear a squeaking noise. I tried a spray for the belt but the noise is still there.

Check your tensioner pulley -- if you do not have enough tension on the serpentine belt, it will slip on the pulleys and cause a squeaking noise (very loud and high pitched). if you push on the serpentine belt with your hand, it should not more more than about an inch -- if it does, you are low on tension. If it does not have any give at all, then you have too much tension, and one of your pulleys might not be turning properly, causing that same noise. If your tension is right, and your car is still making that noise ... and belt dressings (the spray you probably used) are not working to stop it, then it might be a piece of rubber stuck on one of the pulleys, but this usually will not make that sound ... just smoke and a burned rubber smell.

Engine making noise

Based on what you described, sounds like the bearings on one of those items are worn out. Is it a squealing sound??

Another thing, is maybe your serpentine belt is just loose or old. You could go get a can of belt dressing and spray on the ribbed side of the belt, as it is idling.

Sounds like your serpentine belt is dried out.Replace your belt make sure belt tensioner is ok,or you can make sure that it is your belt by using a old candle or belt dressing that you can purchase from your local parts store. While engine is running VERY carefully touch the candle to the ribbed side of the belt and let the wax rub off onto the belt the squeak or chirp should change or go away.Or just spray the belt dressing on per the directions on the can.
