You are going to need a trans overhaul, I am a Ford dealer tech and have done allot of these over the past 20 years for this very problem.

It may very well be something as simple as a bent linkage. This can be verified by a mechanic that knows something about transmissions. If this is the case it would be very inexpensive to fix. Hopefully this is all it is. Have it checked.

I have a 1989 Full size chevy blazer that sat for 6 yrs. Transmission delays shifting out of first gear. Its is almost at 20 mph before it shifts into 2nd. I put an engine from a 95 tahoe into the blazer....

It could be low transmission fluid, a plugged transmission filter, or defective torque converter. I would start with the fluid, then the filter. If these do not solve the problem, I would recommend a reputable transmission mechanic to assess the issue.

Hi and welcome to FixYa!
The automatic transmission fluid really needs to be replaced for it to go back in it's normal operation. It's not major don't worry.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Just bought 1999 forester, transmission sems to have two second delay when shifted into drive is this normal ? no delay when shifted into reversre. thanks

The Forester is a great vehicle, and No, it's not normal to have a 2 second delay when shifting into drive.
This is what I would do, and in the order that I would do it in;
1. Make sure your transmission fluid level is full. If it is;
2. Change the fluid and filter screen in the transmission. Your issue is small right now and the sooner you get it resolved the less likely it will become a major problem. Also, when we buy a used vehicle it can be difficult to know if it has had regular maintenance done it. If you still have the same problem;
3. Have the shift solenoid/shift motor on the transmission checked.

I hope this is helpful.

Steering gets hard,radio goes off,revs up problem comes and goes. is it brain 97 tarus gl 3.0

On the surface I would say this could be a failing multi-function switch. This can cause a host of rather troublesome problems come and go. Including radio that only works in park or neutral and so on. This can also make the transmission shift strangely.

In Ford garages it is referred to as the "Multi-Malfunction switch" as they can cause a host of possessed phantom problems that seem unrelated and are otherwise impossible to chase down and diagnose.

This switch is located on the top of the transmission on the driver side. Look for a large switch where the shift cable meets the transmission. This switch will have a host of wires running to it in one large plug. This should prove to be a rather simple change out. If memory serves me right there is 1 nut for the shifter cable and 2 bolts that hold the switch in place.

Gear shift moves fine will not engage gear.

then the transmission has failed or has sticking engagement solenoid in trans pan, have the fluid and filter replaced and see if that corrects the problem

Transmission 97 intrepid

This is a simple sensor problem. I just had it and the sensor won't allow (to prevent engine damge) the vehicle to shift out of second gear. This is incorporated into the design to allow you to drive the vehicle to get repaired. The dealer will put it on a diagnostic checker, replace your sensor and off you go. Less than one hour.
