Question about 1987 Acura Legend

1 Answer

The ac in my '87 Acura Legend sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. The fan also runs on occasion and not necessarily when the ac is supposed to come on. The system has Climate Control. I've checked and cleaned all fuses.

Mine wasn't a LS but the freon too low to have the compressor clutch switch on. The R12 cans are expensive if you can find them. On one 87 I changed over to R134 because it was completely empty. The 2nd fan at the radiator should go on when the ac is running, even if the main fan is not.

The one of the two fans should go on when the AC is turned on. The other (left) is operated by the switch at the bottom of the radiator. If the freon is low the compressor clutch won't stay engaged. You can watch the clutch and see if it corresponds with the fan not running. Your 1987 is R12 ,but I have converted to the new environmental type when I replaced the compressor. It should be done in a shop where they can evacuate the $ R12, but if it is empty all ready??. Be sure to mark the line with the proper Freon tag and date it. Your Legend can last a long time.

Why won't the fan motor shut off on my 1991 acura legend?

Hey chandralebea,

Try first by replacing the cooling fan engine temp sensor switch, as this may be the cause.

Good Luck

My 1994 acura legend ac only works if i turn it on full blast

High speed only is caused bu a defective blower motor speed control solid state resistor. The resistor is located in the air ducting (for cooling) next to the blower motor under the dash on the passenger side of the car. Remove the lower dash panel to access the part. See picture below of resistor.
Cost for part is about $200.00

The car overheats with new radiator and when I turn the heater and air on the needle comes back down to50% or normal. The overflow container is also cracked. 1994 Acura Legend

Change the thermostat and bleed the air out of the cooling system, make sure the cooling fans come on,and go off by themselves, with the defrost, and the ac off.

I have a 1995 Acura Legend, air conditioner blower stopped workin

It means the blower fan is not running, look for wires that got knocked off, usually at the motor....

Good news is the AC sounds like it is working correctly, so this repair cost should be smaller. Apply external power to the fan terminal to see if it goes, if it does, problem is upstream, switch, resistors, etc.

But sounds like a fan. Test it. independently from the rest of the car

This could happen if your fan is indeed weak.  To test disconnect the thermostat of the radiator by removing the terminals near the radiator hose towards the engine.  You should see the fan run at its highest speed, then you can check if your fan has weakened.
