Question about Volkswagen Beetle

3 Answers

Gasoline contaminated I have a 74 Super Beetle and just replaced the carburator with a new one. Soon after the car would not idle and surged going down the road. Took it back to mechanic who found a speck of dirt in a jet and small particles in the filter. Cleaned out the dirt and changed filter. After about two weeks I have the same problem. Wont idle and see black dirt? specks in filter. Where could they be coming from and how do they get thru the filter? What should i do, new tank? Replace all the fuel lines? Help.

You need to remove the fuel tank and have it cleaned, radiator shops can do this.

You do not need to go through such drastic measures. I recommend pulling the tank and thoroughly cleaning it as sediment builds up over time and then the fuel pump pumps them through the lines. After this you will want to clean out the fuel lines by blowing them out. Disconnect the fuel filter and blow the line from the tank to the filter and then disconnect the line from the injector and blow the line from the filter to the injector. This will solve your problem with the particles.

The gas lines probably are rusted and need to be replaced. Replace the rubber fuel hoses before and after the fuel filter clean out the carb again, by the way you can add a second fuel filter.

I accidently put super unleaded gas.on my VW beetle 2002

That is not a problem it is actually recommended that you use premium 93-94 Octane fuel, if you put turbo blue (115) in it that would be a problem but 93-94 octane is the VW recommended fuel type.

The use of contaminated gasoline or gasoline with a low content of deposit control additives may result in one or more of the following conditions:
^ Excessive accumulation of deposits on intake valves, intake manifold, fuel injectors and combustion chambers. ^ Engine runs rough after cold start. ^ Excessive engine cranking time. ^ Hesitations while driving. ^ Rough engine idle. ^ Reduced engine performance. ^ Poor fuel economy. Conditions may be severe enough to illuminate the MIL in conjunction with storage in the ECM data memory of DTCs for misfire (example: P0300, P030x) and / or lean fuel system (example: P0171, P0174, P1128, P1130, P1136, P1138).
Technical Background
^ Condition may be caused by use of contaminated gasoline. ^ Condition may be caused by use of gasoline with a low content of deposit control additives. Production Solution
Not applicable.
Service
If use of contaminated gasoline is suspected:
Consider advising the customer to change gasoline source (brand/gas station). Contaminated gasoline may exhibit one or more of the following characteristics:
^ May have unique color and odor. ^ May contain undissolved water. ^ May contain sediments and suspended matter. ^ May appear cloudy and (after settling) may show signs of separation. Repair:
Gasoline additive G 001 700 03 or G 001770 A2 can be used for removal of existing carbon deposits from:
^ MPI engine ^ Injectors. ^ Combustion chambers. ^ Intake valves. ^ FSI engine ^ Injectors. ^ Combustion chambers. Tip: For removal of carbon deposits from intake valves of FSI engines, refer to TSB 2019948.
Mix the additive with gasoline directly in the full fuel tank following the mix ratio. For example, 60 ml per 30 liters gasoline, 150 ml per 20 gallons of gasoline.

Ignition switch for a 74 vw super beetle

The plastic ignition switch is held in with a philips screw. You will need to remove the ignition lock cylinder to get to it. A easy way to check is to unplug the wires going into the back of the lock housing and plug in the new switch, without removing anything.
