Question about 1993 Ford F150 SuperCab

1 Answer

My 1993 f-140, 5.0L 4wd, AOD, extended cab/short bed, has trouble going into reverse after the transmission heats up. When it's cold it goes into reverse just fine. When it's hot it will sometimes go into reverse but it skips preety bad. Any ideas?

Check the fluid to see if it smells burnt. If it smells burnt or looks brown then change the fluid and filter. This is a common problem that if caught early may not cause severe damage. If the filter and fluid change do not help the you are looking at a rebuild soon.

While driving 35 mph transmission just lost all gears forward and reverse. Its like its in neutral. 2003 gmc sonoma 4.3 automatic and 4wd

Hi Greg,First thing to check is the Automatic Transmission Fluid make sure its there. If you need to refill have the leakage attended to soonest! Look for broken universal joints if its rear wheel drive and for a broken CV joint if its a front puller. If its none of these get ready to pay big bucks.Regards Johngee10

The transmission seems to slip when going in reverse in my Ford Explorer 1994 (OK going forward). Transmission fluid is OK.

How many miles and is it the original transmission? The AOD transmissions are known for 3-4 and reverse to go out first. The transmission is probably heading towards an inevitable rebuild or replacement. The reverse clutch pack is probably getting to old to hold correctly.

Yes you can adjust the linkage. Go below and you will see where it attaches to the tranny. You will either have a cable or a rod connection.

Transmission Identification

If it's a 1500 then yes the 4l60E tranny is for you. If it's a 2500-3500 you'll need a 4l80E. The 80's are only used in trucks with a gvw or 7200 and greater.

Transmission

Transmission model is 4L60E,and the symptoms you are describing is a common failure on these transmissions all the way back to it's predecesor, the 700 R 4 model. The reverse input shell, splines into the low/reverse planetary sun gear. The reverse input shell has a collar with splines made into it,and these splines are prone to stripping, and sometimes the collar itself will break free from the shell.Without the shell functioning,no reverse, and this is likely what you are hearing.Aftermarket companies sell heavy duty, and standard duty, replacements.Eventually, you will lose the forward gears also.Good luck.
