Question about 1997 Dodge Intrepid
I have pretty much the same problem, however the car sometimes hesitates to accelerate now. What happens is I press down on the gas, it'll lunge forward, pull back and will keep doing it until I let it coast and then I can accelerate again. Also, sometimes while driving on the highway I let off the gas to coast and it's like I'm applying my brakes but it feels like friction within the car. I changed my spark plugs, so signs of oil and one looked like it was going out, there was a small knocking issue that was resolved but other than that, the shake remains.
It almost sounds like it could be in the transmission, this is just an idea but these cars are common for it. They have 2 sensors on the transmission one is called the input speed sensor and the other is an output speed sensor, you would probably have to have someone look at this with a scanner but if these sensors are not reading what they are supposed to be reading they will cause the transmission to do some pretty crazy things.

If the check engine light is on, take the car to an autoparts store and have them use a scan tool to retrieve any fault code(s) that are stored in the computer. Most parts stores offer this service at no charge and the code(s) will help narrow down the problem. (i.e. bad throttle position sensor, etc.) Sure hope this helps you find a resolution to your problem. Best wishes.
