First check the inside of the bulb holder for corrosion and damage. If the bulb isn't a tight fit/making contact, the electrical circuit won't be complete.

It's more likely to be a simple wiring problem- an earthing problem.

Check the wire on the defective light - particularly the black earth wire for corrosion/security of attachment. If the bulb can't 'earth' it won't light up.

A quick check you can do is put the bulb into the holder, switch on the lights, then hold a wire against the metal side of the bulb with the other end of the wire against any suitable earthing point.

If the bulb lights up - it's an earthing problem.

How do I change the halogen bulb. I have the right size but it fits too loosely. My fest bulb blew up.

Inspect the socket and see if the contacts have been pressed down. You can bend them back up slightly using a small tool.

Make sure you do not handle the halogen bulb with bare hands/fingers. The oils in your hands will case the bulbs to fail. Use a cloth when installing a bulb.

How do i fix the brake lights on my mercury sable. all the other lights work fine

Does your car have the `lamp out'indicator system? It's more complicated.
My manual shows fuse #28 , a 15 amp fuse powers the brake bulbs. Is this the one you changed?
A bulb can be out for a long time and you don't notice it,then the other burns out and you think they both went out at the same time, but they might not have, see?
So check the bulbs and make sure you got that brake switch installed correctly. don-ohio (:^)

1997 Crown Vic blows radio fuses

The quickest way to find a short circuit is by putting a bulb in place of the fuse. Anytime the time the bulb lights there is a load. And if the load is a shorted wire the brightness of the bulb will give you a hint. So while you're at it, finding a 'short' is a quicky...keep your eyes on the bulb. gotcha!
