Question about 2000 Kia Spectra

1 Answer

Forced gear selector - now Spectra will not start

2000 Kia Spectra (automatic) - Started the car, but I could not get the car into gear. So I FORCED the gear shift selector to move, but the car would still not go into gear. Now I have not been able to start the car since. Battery is new and charged. Starter was removed, tested and still works. By forcing the gear shift selector, could I have messed up something which prevents me from starting the car? (Fuses are all good.)

I'll give that a try, thanks. Is the neutral parking switch on the transmission (under the hood) or is it part of the gear selector (inside the center counsole between the seats)? I ask because I did a search on "neutral parking switch" and got results for both areas. One site called it a "neutral SAFETY switch" for the transmission and another called it a "park/neutral POSITION switch" and looks like it would go inside the counsole.

Hope you're still out there? I finally got around to getting my hands dirty with this. I removed the 2 screws that bolts the 1 switch to the transmission and heard an electrical "clicking" noise, so I trying turning the ignition and the Kia DID START! However, the instrument panel showed that the car was in NEUTRAL, when the gear-shift selector counsol was in PARK. I tried moving the selector, but the Kia never moved out of neutral. What might be wrong now? Or is it still the same problem? (I haven't replaced anything yet.)

You were right. I took the console apart from between the seats exposing the gear selector. Next I disconnected the end of the gear selector cable where it is bolted under the gear selector mechanism. And the end piece came off! So it looks as though I literally ripped the cable from the throttle. Is it even possible to replace the cable assembly? Or would I have to go to a boneyard? Or if I can get to the broken end of the cable, can I have someone weld it back together? Suggestions?

I have a new problem on the 2000 Kia Spectra. First, let me just say that I appreciate all the help so far. Was very useful.

The new gear shift trans cable was installed. But I still had trouble getting the Spectra into gear. I certainly did not want to force it and snap the trans cable again. Since the car sat for about 2 years, I noticed that the asphalt had small "craters" that the tires settled into. I wondered if this "settling" had anything to do with the gear shift? So I pushed on the car, then had my son apply the brake, and then try to change gears. IT WORKED! However, it led to these two discoveries:

    (1) Placed the car in Park and turned the ignition off. Tried to restart the car and the instrument panel did not show that the car was in Park. I loosened the neutral safety switch, and wiggled it until the instrument panel showed "Park." But after starting the Spectra, changing gears, etc. It would not show park and the safety switch had to be adjusted again. Does the neutral safety switch need replacing, or is it just not positioned correctly?

    (2) The read driver's side tire would not spin/turn. It must be rusted so much that it is locked up. What is the safetest way to remedy this?

UPDATE. And it's a good update. Since the neutral safety switch was easy to get to, and rather inexpensive, I decided to replace it and give it a try. (Especially since the advice I was getting was to scrap the car, which I thought was a little extreme seeing that to this point, I had only spent about $100 to fix the car.) I also began to remove the drum from the rear tire, and in the process of banging the brake drum, I noticed that it started to rotate. So I began to spin it by hand. It was a little stiff at first but the more I spun it, the easier it got. Put the wheel back on. Installed the new neutral safety switch. I was able to put the Kia into gear, no wheels were locked up. So I took it for a drive around the block. THE CAR IS FIXED! I really appreciate the help I was given here. Some was right and some of it was not, but it made me think about the circumstances which had a lot to do with ultimately getting it corrected. THANKS.

Yes yes yes there s a newtral parking switch in those and you eitho bent or broke it off try puting the car in newtral not newtral you can see just go by feel shift the car into l1 try it then l2 try it
then d try it heck even try reverse and newtral
failing that you need a hays manual and a lot of time to crall arround eithor under your dash or hood depending what the book says
happy hunting and good luck
btw thats why all cars come with a parking or hand break dont be afraid to use it b4 you put your car in park it will save you a lot of problems in your tranny like bent parking pins from some moron bumping your car or just a hill or incline.

best idea and easiest thing is call the local dealer ask a mechanic where the netral safety switch is located and if there is also a redundant switch located else where in that model

there are a few different cars with redundant switches also sometimes there is 1 conected to the shifter lever also

i have sean them in a few places but the dealer knowes best

hell if you live close enough walk over and buy the service manager a coffee and ask a few questions he will be glad to help they allways are since they help with the easy stuff you will bring your car in for the hard stuff or at least buy the parts there you will need

just remember that b4 you buy parts find out what the return policy is as it can somtimes get expensive

    hope this helps

    have a great weekend

    opps

i furgot to mention find out why the shifter was locked in the first place there is usualy a break peadle lock out cable

simple put it will not allow you to shift out of park unless you hit the breaks in some cases it is an electric lock out witch means dead batterie no shift out of park unless you put cables on first

so if you did force the shifter out without having a live batterie or didn't tromp the brakes while shifting then you will probably have to open the console up and try to see what you bent if it aint in the console then it's under hood or dash if there are 2 cables running to the shifter than it is probably under the dash but follow the cables to find out where they go somtimes it's as easy as a broken or loose bolt other times it can be a bent pin in a switch a good tool for following cables along is a flexi flash lite from local tool store such as princess auto in canada

  • jamie Aug 03, 2009

ok sounds like the cable poped off on 1 end or the other

check the cable and see that it is conected at bothe ends

this can be tone by having a friend move the shifter lever while car not runing and make sure the cable actualy moves the lever on the trans if it does make sure the pin o n the trans actualy moves

    ok every thing moves

now it's time for a mechanic and not joe from down the block who generaly fixes every thing and isnt a licenced mech

some tranys are riged with an electronic lock out that will allow toe trans to actualy shift but elecrto lock will not allow the valve body to engage so it's licence time or time to buy a haynes manule

you choose haynes make a great series of manules pictures and vivid descriptions

if not sure pick 1 up at chapters and give it a read it will cost you 30.00-50 bucks but they are worth it

    wow

well the front bearing is probably seized ( ouch )

the cost can be large when it comes to wheel bearings as you need some specialty tools

check the cost of parts with the dealer and cost of repair also

the rule of thumb is generally never spend more on a car than you paid for it or that it is worth

most people would scrap a car in this kind of shape

it has trans problems and NOW wheel bearing problems

    whats next ?

it sounds like this car is hoping to go the the great drive in in the sky and it is past it's prime already..

best advice i can give you is to put an add on Craig's list and sell the car for parts some times a car like yours is worth more in pieces than it is a whole..

heck you could probably sell half the car to people on fix ya that need different working parts cheep

this would allow you to the ability to buy a running and safety car that has little or nothing wrong with it

well the choice is yours and it is your money..

the rule of thumb is never spend more than 1/2 of what you paid for the car in parts or depending on the year 1/2 of the book value

book value on a 2000 spectra is around 1900 canadian dollars

so figure out what the car will require to be road worthy again and do some math

wheel bearing likely brakes and rotors and then threes that pesky switch

probably in the neighbor hood of 8-900 dollars

parts wise the car is worth about the same if not more

wheels tires doors fenders hood and motor are all worth something trans is probably scrap unless you can sell it to a re and re shop

the car is worth a few dollars in parts but will drain your wallet if you try and fix her

like mose women she will bleed you dry b4 you notice your wallet is actually open

this is just my opinion but of course it's your wallet

good luck and sorry to be the bearer of bad news

    sincerly

I have a 2002kia spectra with a standard transmission. the check engine light came on and was diagnosed as the Knock Sensor, gas cap or an E-vap leak. So I replaced the knock Sensor. Was told to disco

There will be a switch in the gear selector rails that will not make contact if any selector is out of position (in gear). So you will have 2 safety switches that have to be in sync before the ECM will allow ignition. You will have to comment on the codes found to determine which area to investigate to save money.

I presume your car is an automatic, so its either been put together wrongly or its the adjustment on the gear selector. This could also be the problem if it is a stick shift. Double check your gear positions on the changer

When first started, the Kia spits and sputters.

The hold light is on because the button on the left side of the gear selector is depressed. this causes the car to start off in second and doesnt go past third. This information is in your owners maual.
