Question about 2004 Kia Rio

3 Answers

2004 Kia Rio Stalling while slowing down or stopping. Also sputters/hesitates/surges sometimes at any speed, any gear, but most often around 80km/h in 4th gear. If I turn the steering wheel slightly, the RPM's jump from around 700 to 1500, to 600, to 1000 etc. It has stalled twice while slightly turning the steering wheel while stopped. There are 85000 kms on it. Manual transmission. All routine maintenance has been performed at Kia dealer as per maintenance schedule. No engine codes or check engine light has ever come on. Cleaned the throttle body thoroughly, (throttle body cleaner and toothbrush to clean around the butterfly valve, licensed mechanic neighbor helped me). I have had this car into the Kia dealership 6 times for this stalling problem, initially it seemed to happen only during slow turns....they replaced power steering pump, and are now telling me it is normal for this car to do this. It stalled on me going approx. 45 - 50 km/h on the hwy last week as I was slowing down for traffic in front of me, it stalled twice a few days ago slowing down for a stop light, and also while turning a corner. The dealer insists this is normal....NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT OR CODES, NO PROBLEMS is what they have told me....I have almost gotten into 4 accidents due to this problem! Any ideas? EGR valve? Throttle position sensor maybe? Kia will not check these for me, let alone under warranty, although I have asked. Weather seems to play no role in this, wet, dry, cold out, hot, doesn't matter. Also, no difference if the car is warmed up or cold. Please let me know if you need any further info. Thanks!

You can change all your sensors, and even ecm, will not stop stalling until you upgrade your engine to chassis grounds, you need to use at least AVG 6 with good connectors, check all wiring for loose connections, Have been through all the sensor changes etc, ecm cannot interpret sensor inputs, due to poor wiring. After you solve your problem, get rid of this piece of ****, poorly designed and very poor quality car. I have 2 of them and am in process of cutting these from my herd.

Unstable idle 2002 Kia Rio

The first thing I would do is clean the throttle valve and the idle speed control airbyapss valve, these parts get sludged up and cause stalling and surging idle problems.

2002 kia rio stalls when coming to a stop if the gas is not applied

My personnel fix for this.

Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Transmission problems

This is what my 04 Kia Rio is doing exactly. I was told that the TCM and Shift Solenoid "C" is faulty. Am trying to figure out how to go about fixing that without paying more than the car is worth. My tech checked with the local Kia dealership and the TCM new is I think around $700. You also have to buy the program to tell this high dollar part what to do and that is right at $100. I have found that sometimes if I let the car warm up and then keep hitting the overdrive button, eventually it starts shifting correctly.
