It's on the harmonic balancer pulley at the front of the engine, at the bottom.

How to find top dead center


Look for a mark on the crankshaft pulley to line up with some corresponding mark on the engine. If marks are inconclusive, get it to *near* tdc and look again:

Put a stiff wire down #1 plug/injector hole and gently turn engine by hand. TDC is when the wire sticks out highest. The amount of travel is tiny for 10 degrees either side of TDC, so get it near and look again for marks. This will only tell you piston TDC, not whether it's TDC firing or TDC exhaust - for that you will need to examine camshaft markings, or consult manual for lobe/rocker positions.

How do you set TDC?


Yes, there's timing marks on all engines. You'll find a mark on the harmonic balancer that the pullys bolt to on crankshaft. Other mark is on a tab bolted to the engine to one side of the balancer. There's a TDC mark stamped into this tab for Top Dead Center of the #1 cylinder. Place these to marks in alignment and your there.

With marks i use _or . at the cams


look on the back of the cams to see if their are any slots on them sorry not experianced like a dealer fitter on this car so go back to basics and look ,firstly is this engine a rebuild or something or has the timing belt snapped ,if so is it a valve free engine or have got bent valves ask at dealer for this ,then TDC no1 with plug out and long thin screwdriver to locate the TDC then look at the valves engine rotates to the right so its inlet cam lobe up and to the left ,exhaust up and to the right then look for what could be a corresponding mark ,before cranking engine make sure you turn it over with a rachet and socket first 360? to ensure no valves crunching

Engine Timing marks on a 4.0 ford ranger on a 2005


Rotate the engine so that No. 1 cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke. Check that the timing marks are aligned on the camshaft and crankshaft pulleys. An access plug is provided in the cam belt cover so that the camshaft timing can be checked without removal of the cover or any other parts. Set the crankshaft to TDC by aligning the timing mark on the crank pulley with the TDC mark on the belt cover. Look through the access hole in the belt cover to make sure that the timing mark on the cam drive sprocket is lined up with the pointer on the inner belt cover.

Where is the reference mark, for TDC of the 1st cylinder, according to the pneumonic balancer located and what does it look like? I have a cougar with 3.8 V6 motor. Need help locating these marks.


The TDC mark on the "Harmonic" balancer is a white line. It is located on the thick metal part of the balancer nearest to the engine block.

How do you alighn for tdc


Usually we dont align to TDC. its better to align at BTDC ( before top death centre). Each engine have each manuals. For one of my isuzu engine i have looked up the manual, and saw the markings in crank and related engine body. so i align the marking to 9 degrees as marking showed in the manual! try search any engine manual!

Looking for timing belt marks on vw 2 liter jetta. car does not want to idle must rev up.


There is no manual adjustment for timing, this is done digitally by using a VAG 1552 scan tool or equivalent. Now if timing mark is all you need just to serve your curiosity then there are a couple.

Set engine to TDC for cylinder #1 by turning the crankshaft until timing mark on flywheel or torque converter aligns with marks on the transmission case.
  • Manual Transmission
Confirm that engine is set to TDC for cyl #1 by checking that the timing mark on the flywheel lines up with notch at inspection hole on manual trans.

  • Automatic Transmission
Confirm that engine is set to TDC for cyl #1 by checking that the timing mark on torque coverter lines up with the edge of the inspection hole on automatic transmission.

Remove upper toothed belt cover. Once removed, you will see the letters O.T. with an arrow on the upper rear toothed belt guard. Check that mark on camshaft pulley is aligned with mark on toothed belt guard. This brings camshaft to TDC for cyl. #1.

It is unlikely that a belt has skipped a cog, but if that happens your engine will run very rough or not operate at all. You might have other issue in the air metering sensors (MAF) which doesn't take account of temperature. That means whether the engine is cold or holt it will always run rough and definitely activate an MIL.

Replaced timing belt need do you start at TDC to


For all timing belts you should start with the crank sprocket pointing at TDC and the cam sprockets pointing at their designated marks.

You should be able to mark the old belt and and put corresponding marks on the cam and crank pulleys, then remove the old belt and transfer the marks to the new belt and install it.

Personally I would buy a manual as this would provide you with a step by step guide to performing the repair.

I am not positive that this is an interference engine, it looks like it is to me. If you are not accurate in your timing you will cause severe engine damage.
