Question about 1990 Nissan Maxima

1 Answer

I have a 1990 Nissan maxima that has been leaking a dark brown fluid on the rear driver side. It smells like gas when u walk up on it but had it checked for leaks and mechanic said there were no gas leaks. Took it to another shop an they said i had a torn boot, but it was nothing to be concerned about given the model car. Could the leakage be coming from the torn boot.

Your maxima is a front wheel drive. a torn boot would leak grease, and it would be in the front.
the leak could be old gas with rust in it... take it in and pressure test the fuel system, also check the fuel filter.,especially if the car cranks for a few seconds before starting some times ,that means there is a pressure drop..

This sounds like a transmission issue. Assuming it's an automatic transmission, check for lack of fluid that is causing the slipping. Also, if the fluid level is good but is a dark brown and gives a burned smell, it needs to be changed. Before changing the fluid and filter, bring the car to a transmission shop to ensure you aren't throwing good money after bad by changing the fluid in a bad transmission.

My car is not moving, it goes in gear and idols like it wants to but some things not letting it go.

Have the axles checked on both sides, left, and right, see if they are dislodged from the transmission,or broken inside the boots or the cv joints,if one axle is dislodged ,or broken, your car would have these symptoms. Also check the transmission fluid to make sure it is not low ,by checking the dip stick with the car running in park.

Usually when a pinion bearing goes bad it will make a howling sound when your not on the gas. It could be that it went bad. If you think it's tranny fluid leaking check your fluid level it is dark red by the way and should not smell burnt if it does you have tranny problems. Gear oil is not red but dark brown.

Can't start 1990 nissan maxima. it's like it's not getting gas although I can smell gas

Thats because your engine is flushed with gas and not enough air from cranking the engine so much. If you smell gas, then the car is getting gas. Gas is not your problem. It might be your starter or check your ignition system such as spark plug, etc.....

Do you have a leak? If not try bleeding the ones that don't work. If you get no fluid pressure, replace the master cylinder.

Sounds like a bad brake wheel cylinder (drum brakes) or caliper (disk brakes).
