If the knock speeds up with rpm increase then it definitely is the engine. if it is a solid sounding knock that would be bottom end. if it is more of a hollow knock or more like a tick then could be top end...lifters, exhaust leak or check to see if anything is hitting your cooling fan.

SOURCE: Ticking noise

If it's just a light ticking alot of the 2.2 litres have the same problem if it's what is wrong with mine it's the lifters knocking and the same with alot of other gm motors trying using an oil stabilizer like lucas

SOURCE: Car wont start, makes a clicking sound under the hood

When you turn the ignition key to the start position you apply 12 volts to the solenoid. The solenoid is a relay switch that closes when you turn the key to the start position. When it closes It applies 12 volts to the starter motor. The starter motor draws a lot of electrical current, (so much so that they could not run that current thru the ignition switch, so they use the solenoid) What you hear clicking is the solenoid closing, or trying to close.I assume that "*****clicking" as you define it is a chatter rather then one click.

Possible causes: A low battery voltage. Has the battery been replaced in the last few
years few years. Try charging over night and see what happens
Bad connections on the battery terminals. Check for any white powder on and around the battery terminal. Use baking soda and water to clean the terminals (it'll fizz) then clean theem with a terminal brush. You can get one at any auto store
Bad connection on the starter solenoid
If it a manual shift, there is usually a kill switch somewhere on the shift mechanism
that prevents the starter from working if the car is in gear and the clutch is out
In automatic shifter the kill switch is in the shift selector mechanism so you can't start the car unless you are in park.

Hope this helps Lood luck Loringh

SOURCE: Ticking noise in engine

May be mice, but I had a truck that did that from a worn speedo cable.

Knocking noise in engine of 2002 Nissan maxima

This is hard to say with hearing the noise but try to pin point the noise , is it coming from the top or bottom of the motor , the knocking noise could be a bearing in the lower motor or may be something else making it sound like a bearing,

Sentra rattle in engine

If this vehicle was driven without oil, the rattle or knock you hear is more than likely a damaged main bearing or rod bearing...sounds like its time for a QUALIFIED PROFESSIONAL to listen to your engine run and give you his opinion... Good Luck!!!

Why my pontiac making a clicking sound?

is it an overhead cam motor? if not most likely the hydraulic lifters. its pretty common for gm engines (all the 96 and up vortecs do it) if the piston was hitting anything it wouldnt be a clicking noise, and your knock sensor would shut down the engine. however being that it comes from just one side of the motor im almost certain its an exhaust leak at the manifold. those are your options but im certain its an exhaust leak. hope this helps

I took the car for repair and they fixed my oil pan valve cover gasket and the oil pan gasket. they put the knock sensor wire direct to the knock sensor since they didnt have a connector. i drove off and...

the knock sensor changes the timing of the motor when it senses knock ,it sounds like the wire may have come off ,it sounds as if when you press the gas the timing should advance and it sounds as if its not advancing thats why you are hearing a clattering noise on accelerating.if you keep driving it like that you can do engine damage

a knocking sound in an engine is never good. with a high mileage engine things start to get worn. so bearing clearances get larger and things begin to knock and rattle. i would try running a higher viscosity oil than is recommended it might help with the knock. but truthfully it probably needs to be rebuild or a whole new motor installed
