- thanks for all ya comment about the car i was fixing God bless..
Since you're saying a few things are out, I'd say it's most likely a fuse. It seems odd that the tail lights would be wired with the interior lights though. The "alarm" tail lights probably work because they have been wired after the fuse box.
This link has a ton of manuals and scans for MR2s. http://opc.mr2oc.com/ The 1988 repair manual doesn't seem to have the fuse block diagram. The 1991 (MK2 model) repair manual does. (I'm not sure if the fuse blocks match). The other difficulty is that this car (1991 anyway) seems to have three fuse blocks. One in the engine compartment, one by the drivers feet, and another in the "trunk." Good Luck!

Before you start looking a the fuse box, make sure of 2 things: do you have power and a good ground at the light housing. Then, make sure that the door switches are grounded good, and are actually working. If no power, get back to me and I will get you to the fuse box, altho I doubt that the fuse box is the root cause.

I have a 1992 Toyota MR2, one evening I cam out to go get a movie, went to start the car and all that happened was the starter started clicking rapidly. I turned the ignition switch off and the starter kept clicking away. While it was clicking I noticed the spedo smoking so I rushed to disconnect the battery. When I finally disconnected the battery I looked up and saw smoke rolling out from the engine compartment. The car did not start on fire luckily. When the car cooled I started T-shooting and found that the smoke from the mid engine compartment came from the E-brake cable burning up. I have replaced the starter, the E-brake cable the gauge cluster, and the ignition switch. Checked every solenoid and switch involved with the starter circuit. Everything checks out fine. There was an after market security system installed, I have since then removed it. I have not reinstalled the new gauge cluster in fear that this might happen again. All the electrical works, lights, stereo, antenna, etc, etc, etc but when I turn the ignition switch to start with the clutch pedal fully depressed the same problem occurs.
