When the 'check engine' light comes on it usually indicates that your engine needs servicing. It could mean that one of the sensors on the engine is not working properly, but it does not mean that you need a new engine.
I suggest that you take your car in to a local mechanic who you know and or trust, and have the mechanic diagnose the problem.
Good luck!
Does not mean you need a new engine, it mean's the the ECM, the car's engine management system has detected a issue that caused your engine to stop running. Have the car scanned for the DTC code which would indicate the issue that needs to be addressed to have the engine run 100% again. It could be as simple as a dirty fuel filter that needs to be replaced. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to answer any questions you may have.
