All 4 windows of my 1997 vw golf went down and wont go back up again. for all 4 to go at the same time to me means something central or controlling?

pull off and clean the central locking relay.but you may need to replace it.

Check body to motor ground wire and battery to motor and body ground.

All these components operate via the central locking control unit. Check fuses No.4, 37, 6, 3, 14. If these fuses are ok, the control unit may be faulty and need to be replaced. The control unit is located behind the right dash panel.[on right hand drive vehicle , may be else where on left hand drive vehicle.

you have just found this out.it is a standard feature of all vw/audi/seat/skoda cars
unlock/hold key over,the windows will go down
lock/hold key over the windows will go up
then unlock the car with the remote,car reset.
sit in car with engine on,switch off engine(do not open any door)driver can open/close any window(you can even put your hand into window frame and it will rollback,all on its(not for fun)
if windows rollback after you have used button to close them you may have sticky runners/rubbers.
this is not in the hand book,tell all your friends.....only a german car.....

the gas flap is operated with the central locking,stand at rear of car with tailgate open,just inside to the right,under the floormat you will find the central locking pump.but first renew the batteries in the remotes then unlock the car with the key and hold the key over for 30 secs, the windows may go down,
then lock the car with the key and hold over for 30 secs,the windows may go up and the sunroof,if fitted will close,then unlock with remote button held down for 30 secs,this will reset alarm/central locking.
if you need to get to gas flap, pull carpet away in boot behind flap area and pull wire to unlock....

my front windows wont go down but the back ones do on my p reg vw golf can anybody help

Maybe the window isn't mounted properly so it makes motor hard to move window up and because of motor overload it blow fuce. Thry to adjuste window better...

Hello, My 2000 2.0 Golf just recently had the same problem. I would feel the ABS pump working at certain times through the accelerator pedal. I found the right rear sensor failed the Bentley manual continuity test . After removing it I found it was pretty rusted. The sensor head is located inside the rear brake disc hub area and this probably explained this rust. The rust probably worked its way into the sensor body where you can't clean it and thus the resistance value went above specification. I ordered mine through Autohaus and cost me just over $50.00 for both rear sensors. Even though my drivers side was good I replaced it at the same time. The ABS light hasn't been on for 4 days now..

there is a motor behind the door panel for the mechanical part for the window to operate yours may have burnt out so replace it get one from the bone yard cheap. and clips.

do you know the trick how to get your key to work with any door barrel or are you just focusing on central locking?
