Someone else asked the same question, but different car- I guess they didn't believe me-
The answer is - it's the opposite process. You need to put the refrigerant in the system in order for the clutch and compressor to come on. The refrigerant comes in highly pressurized cans, and it will load into the system through the low side filler valve. Once there's sufficient pressure in the system, the compressor kicks on. At first it will cycle on and off fairly rapidly until the system is adequately pressurized. If the compressor were to run without refrigerant and lubricating oil, it would burn out. I suggest you purchase a gauge( similar to a tire gauge) that hooks up to the same valve that the filler hose hooks up to. It will give a reading of the system charge, so you don't under or over charge the system, and they're relatively inexpensive. They can be purchased in the auto parts store where you get the refrigerant and filler hose.

Hope this helps...

If the a/c lines do not have enough compression in them the clutch will not turn. unfortunatley u will have to take it to a shop and have them fill it. with freon and a/c dye, so if it get hot again they can find the leak.

How much freon do I put in a 1995 grand am when

First, freon is no longer available. Your vehicle requires either R-12 or 134A. Take it to a ac specialist.

1996 pontiac grand prix a/c. Will the clutch turn if there is no freon in it?

No. The AC clutch will not engage if the freon is low. Or it may also be your low pressure switch is bad.

Just moved to AZ. and our ac does not work. when we turn it on it just blows hot air, clutch is not kicking in either, does that mean we need to get a new clutch or do we need freon or what.. thank you

You will need to add freon. Freon loss has most likley occured and if so, there is a leak somewhere in the system. The clutch will not engage if the freon level to too low.

A/c clutch on '98 jeep grand cherokke won't

sounds as though there is a leak, check all connections on a/c lines, now you will need to see if the clutch is getting power, if it is then the clutch will need replaced, if not then check to make sure where the fuses and relay plug into are receiving power. Hope this helped Tim

1995 pontiac grand am. need to know where to fill the freon

Hi, Freon is a gas or liquid that has to be pumped in to you cars cooling system.
You need a special machine to do this. Most modern cars don't use Freon anymore.
Now there is an enviromentally safer product that they use ( R134a )
You may have to make some changes to you system to make this work. Good luck.

Air conditioner smell

Every single grand am I have owned does this!! They seem to have a gas smell when running the ac, or if it is extremely hot outside..It was the coil pack on 2 of mine. The extra load of the ac..the other was it makes the car run hotter. I just rigged my radiator fan to run constantly and the smell went away.
