It appears to be on the transaxle housing. Two wire connector, note the wire colors. The picture maybe transaxle tail housing, at the moment, I don't know which side?
It is part of/incorporated into the transmission range selector switch. The switch is under the hood on the transmission where the shift cable connects to the shift post. See picture

There is a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) mounted on the transaxle, that is a good place to start. The VSS tells the powertrain management system when and how to shift the transmission and also gives the speedometer it's signal.
From your description that the speedometer quit working at the same time I would suspect the a faulty VSS.
your transmission is more than likely going out. I do know that between 1997 and 2002 the transmission that went into GMC vehicles have had bad reviews. I had a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix that was doing the same thing and the transmission went out on me. I am not positive to this but i have read the research and it has happened to me before.
VSS (vehicle speed sensor) Tells the PCM (computer) the speed of the vehicle so the PCM can make the proper information to the TCM (transmission control module) to shift.
YOU are goin gto need a scan tool NOt a code reader to monitor the VSS to see what it is putting out for speed when the car is moving But I believe you need a VSS but do not not Go out and buy one until you have had it tested , and can positively confrim it is bad first. Transmission problems are an issue with Sables. If you Google transmission and Mercury Sable you will come to quite a few complaints. There are actually a few posts on this website where folks are having issue too. Personally a cheap o-ring in my 1999 Sable went out resulting in a $1800 transmission repair bill. I literally gave the car away about three years ago. In almost 20 years of owning vehicles the two years I had the Sable was the most expensive and busiest in the way of repairs.
