If you have the tools you can change it. Sometimes power steering pumps can be a real bear sometimes they arent so bad.

SOURCE: can i substitute ATF fluid

Yes, you can use ATF fluid in your power steering. I have seen it done a million times and it works but add PS fluid as soon as you can because it's better to use the right correct fluid

SOURCE: can hydraulic oil be substituted for power steering fluid?

Probably not. There is enough trouble with foaming and cavitation in the power steering pumps when the CORRECT fluid is used. Why would you even ask? Power steering fluid is NOT that expensive - go buy some.

SOURCE: Don't see where to put power steering fluid at!

Usually located at the pump. With most cars there is a resavoure behind the pulley. Vans are famous for tucking things away so as a last resort follow the hose from your rack back to the pump and if there is another hose coming from the pump follow it to the resavoure

Leaking power steering fluid

You are likely seeing auto trans fluid. It is often used as a substitute for power steering fluid. You say it's leaking badly so someone probably got tired of paying for power steering fluid and switched to the much cheaper ATF.

I would drain your power steering pump, even if I had to take it off and dump the fluid! Yes, you do need to use power steering fluid, but what will get you in the most trouble is if you mix your fluids because then they work against each other.

While some people will use transmission fluid in a power steering pump in an emergency, I always recommend they drain it out and use the proper fluid in the proper place.

My power steering is low and my yukon is making a noise when i turn. i dont have any power steering fluid right now can i use atf instead until i can get some.

I would get power steering fluid and not substitute ATF... I'm sure there's a fuel station or convenience store nearby you can locate PS fluid from. Also when you top it up, with it running turn steering from stop to stop (side to side) not holding at stops for anything longer than a second or two to get air out of system, then retop.

Factory correct power steering fluid for 1999 Plymouth Breeze

Just by a bottle labelled "power steering fluid" at local parts store, you'll be o.k., just don't let anyone talk you into using transmission oil as substitute.
