Can't get the rear drum off my 2000 dodge caravan.

The drum spins and it looks like it is rusted to the hub. Hammering hasn't loosened it.

Usually the brake shoes are to expanded, one must locate the adjustment hole which should have a rubber plug, elongated oval shape about an inch
behind drum , around 6 or 12 oklock( depending on model). there is a spur gear. with a flat screwdriver, or modified bent one; turn spur to loosen brake pads.if getting tight u r going the wrong way.

After the wheel is removed you need to spray penetrating oil around the lug studs. Next, hit the drum with a hammer between the studs until it pops, now pull it off.

How to get drum pads off a 2000 dodge caravan

The pad drums of your 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan can wear with use. Heat buildup in the brakes can glaze, warp or crack the drum. If that happens, replacement of the drum is the only way to fix it. In most cases, you can remove the rear drums, replace them with a new set and leave the existing shoes on the van. Take a minute and inspect the brake shoes thoroughly while you have the drums off the van.

  1. Loosen the lug nuts on the rear of your 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan with a lug wrench. Do not take them off the wheel studs.
  2. Raise the rear of the van with a jack and support it on a set of jack stands. Place the stands under the rear suspension, making sure they are secure. Remove the lug nuts from the wheel studs and pull off the rear wheels.
  3. Check the rear drum where the wheel studs come through for retaining clips. These are used during the manufacturing process; and if they are still on your van, they need to be removed. Pry the clip off the wheel stud with a flat head screwdriver and discard them. Most vehicles will have two clips on each brake drum.
  4. Grasp the brake drum on the outer edges and pull it straight off the wheel studs and brake pads. Discard the old drum and slide the new drum into place, aligning the holes in the drum with the wheel studs. Push the drum in until it seats completely. Repeat the process on the opposite side of the van.
  5. Position the wheel back on the wheel studs and install the lug nuts by hand. Raise the back of the van with a jack and remove the jack stands from under the suspension. Lower the van to the ground and tighten the lug nuts with a lug wrench.

Cannot get rear brake drum off, 1996 dodge ram 3500 four wheel dr, anti lock breaks. any suggestions would help

Slack off the parking brake cables completely. Follow the cable from one wheel to where it comes together with the cable from the other wheel. There should be an adjusting nut. Loosen the nut and turn the cable joint so that it unscrews as far as it will go. Also open the fluid reservoir in the engine compartment. You can now attempt to remove the drum. Some hammering may help to get the shoes to retract fully. Releasing/penetrating fluid on the centre of the drum where it fits over the hub is also recommended.

Discs or drum brakes on a Dodge Caravan

It will be disc on the front for sure, but the rear can be either,,look threw the wheel at the front, and look threw the wheel on the rear,if you can see the brake pads, and caliper,,it will look like the front, then it is disc,if there is just a drum,it will just look like nothing,a rust color metal, that is all,if it is drum brakes on the rear.

Remove rear drum brakes

Hit the drum with a hammer to loosen it up. The drums wont come off easy because the shoes form a litte bit of a ridge in the drum

Can't get the rear brake drums off. When I remove the rubber plug (adjuster hole) on the back of the mounting plate all I can see inside is what appears to be threads of a long bolt. Usually I am used to...

I just did this today. The drum may be rusted onto the hub. On the left side srum (driver's side), I had to turn the star wheel down to loosen the brakes on the drum. Sprayed the drum where it meets the axle/hub with PB Blaster. Then using the 2 threaded holes next to the wheel studs, put a puller on there to remove the drum. Hammering did not work for me. I'm doing the other side tomorrow - I think the starwheel needs to be turned the oposite direction but I'm not sure yet.

How do i get the rear drums off

block front wheels jack up rear wheels make sure parking brake is off and that the wheel spins freely and waxk it with a big hammer
really just hit the drum top bottom and sides till the rust breaks away
if it breaks away and moves and still wont come off you might need to loosen the adjuster from the slotted hole on the back side

After sitting in driveway, back wheels have completely locked up.

Chock the front tires, loosen up the lug nutes on the rear tires, jack the rear end up, uncap the adjuster dust caps on the back of the rear drums, either use a brake spoon or straight blade screwdriver and turn the star adjuster while spinning the wheel until you have no resistance. If this does not work remove the rear tires and hit the sides of the drums with a small sledge hammer or hammer to loosen & break up the rust, When you get movement on the drum, hit it betweeen the studs. Be patient, this may take some time.

you can tap on the drum with a hammer they should come right off but don't beat on them as they will break if you hit to hard and if the brake shoes are to tight they need to be adjusted looser before you try to remove the drums
