Question about 1995 Mercury Villager

1 Answer

No start Hi, I have a 95 mercury villager that has many electrical problems. First the car has started the most recent electrical problem of not starting. it will start sometimes but will not start many times and if you wait 2 hours it might start or it may take 2 day before it starts. When it does not start the lights on the dashboard will come on and the fuel pump will turn on as normal but nothing at the starter. I have cross the starter cylinoid and if someone is turning the key the starter might turn over and sometimes it just sparks. I am thinking that it might be one of the ignition relays but I have no clue as to which relay to replace or where the ignitions relay is at to change it. any ideas?Jerry

I checked all connections and all wires are making good contact. I decided to remove the starter and get it checked, but before I took the starter to the local auto store to see if the starter is good I took the cover of the starter off and found that the armature was completly coated with carbon dust from the armatures brushes. I cleaned the armature up with emmery cloth (metal sand paper) and cleaned the armatures slots. I greased the bearings while I was in there and put it all back and installed starter back into car. Wow first turn of key and it roared to life, I have not had the slitest problem starting since. saved about $165.00 for new starter. Now if I can only get my dashboard lighting pack to work when I turn my headlights on...hmmph. Dont try to do this repair unless you know a little about how the armature and stator works together or you may just cause the starter short out.

It sounds like you need to clean both battery cable connections on the battery and make sure they are not spread. You may have to cut off steel clamps and replace with lead kit. Also, clean the 2 smaller wires on the poitive post of the battery.

I have a 95 mercury villager and the brake light won't turn off when the vehicle is off

Hi, the problem is usually the stop light switch above the pedal, but can also be the relay. First find the switch above the pedal and take the connectors off. If the lights go out, replace the switch. If not, please get back to me for info on the relay and light circuit.

1995 Villager Engine light is on

you may have a broken crankshaft snout. This was a common problem on 93-95 Villagers if customer replaced a/c belt and overtightened the belt tensioner.

Did you ecently have the belt changed?
Also, remove distributor cap and rotor ( 1 screw) and slotted plate/ Look for brown dust on optical sensors. If yes clean them and see if van starts. If it starts you will need a new distributor (ebay $200) as the bearing is going.

95 Mercury Villager will not start

check/replace the starter relay switch in the relay box under the hood. The relay box is located on the front right of the engine compartment. easy fix, inexpensive part if that is the problem.
