Question about 1998 Nissan Altima

Car hestation when you press on gas

My car will start out fine, then at about 30 mph it will hesitate and **** then when you feather the gas it will run fine for a few minutes then do it again. Also black smoke comes from tailpipe, but no fuel odor. Would a clogged fuel pressure regulator be the cause of the problem??

Skmet, Have you had a full tune up lately, including an injector cleaning. Problem could be a misfire, have a good Tech scan for codes, diagnose and estimate repair. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

Car runs fine for 15 miles or so. if i get into the gas after that it just coasts or hesitates. if I feather the gas it runs fine

The fuel system is borderline--fuel pump worn, plugged fuel filter, fuel tank not venting properly. Listen at the tank while someone turns on the key (no start attempt)--you should hear the pump run for a moment or two, then shut off. If it keeps running, the pump is likely worn out. Replace the fuel filter in any case. Pop the fuel cap loose after it starts to run poorly--does that give it another 15 miles? the tank vents through the charcoal canister--not the open air.
