Question about 2001 Toyota Prius

Prius screeching noise before starting

My 2001 prius has 150,000 miles. Lately it's been making a terrible screeching noise in the mornings when I turn on the key (even before the engine is running with nothing turned on, just the key) it lasts for a 1/2 minute, then stops. It's very hot and dry right now if that makes a difference.

I have a 1998 NWH10 Toyota Prius. My problem on Start up.

Have both your battery and alternator inspected. Turn it on, disconnect your negative battery cable, if it dies, you need an alternator, if not, then you may want to test your battery for bad cells.

Loud noise in gas engine

I am a fellow Prius owner, mine only has 8,000 miles though ;-) If I was you I'd just bite the bullet and take it to the dealer. Worst case is you're out the $100 or whatever they'd charge to diagnose the problem. You can always fix it yourself but if they do a proper diagnosis it could save you money in the long run. Does it sound like the noise is internal? You may also want to search or post at, a Prius forum.p.s. Congrats on getting 189K miles on it already, these cars last a long time, I'm very happy with mine.

Toyota Prius starting problem

There's a known problem with the early Toyota Prius (2001 - 2003), when running the engine for a long period of time without moving or when the car is driven only for short trips (short city driving), the Prius might not start.

You have to change the original battery with a 356 CCA which is bigger because the battery is bigger you also have to change what is holding it into place.
