Sounds like the A/C compressor clutch has overheated and become inoperable. Open the hood, start engine, observe the compressor face. It should be turning and also see if that's where the noise and burning smell is coming from. Good luck!!!
Not sure what you mean by diode slot empty. Have you checked to see if the system is full of freon ? If yes, then you would check for voltage at the compressor relay and then the compressor clutch.
you have moisture in the system this causes your expancion valve to freeze up an stop working, thats why it works for sort time and when it de-freezes stars working again. you need to do a EVAC & RECHARGE with a good AC service equipment, specially attention to pull vacumm por at least 20minutes so you get all moisture out of the system.
Good luck
Unless you are replacing the struts as a unit; springs and cartridge together, you will need a spring compressor to avoid dying from the coiled spring when released.
If you are starting on DIY repairs, I recommend you invest in a Haynes service manual for your Santa Fe: 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe
CHECK THE COMPRESSOR FUSE AND RELAY.IF BOTH GOOD.PROBLEM COULD BE LOW REFRIGERANT LEVEL OR FAULTY AC COMPRESSOR CLUTCH COIL OR DAMAGE LOOSE WIRE TO CLUTCH COIL.FAULTY LOW PRESSURE SENSOR.
