You can go to the parts store to buy the chilton or haynes manual for 20.00 .. woth it if one is driving a older car. there are marks on the pulleys. to be aligned.... but it must be done when in the tdc of the compression stroke (cylinder 1) this would take too long, as i'm a slow typer..god luck.

Loud chatter on start and rattle from timing chain area

The timing chain area also takes in the alternator and water pump. To isolate the source of the noise, use the old mechanics trick.

Place a 3 foot 1/4 inch brass rod against the flap at the opening of your ear and push until it closes. Place the other end of the rod against various engine components and listen. The noisy problem will conduct the noise up the rod to your ear and you can hear quite precisely where the problem is. Much safer than laying your ear all over a running engine.

You can also loosen the fan belt and run the engine without alternator or water pump (briefly) to see how that affects the problem. Chatter on start makes me think of starter and Bendix gear problems. Sounds like a 2 person diagnostic team to me; one to start the car and one to listen and probe.

Don't know if Subaru Forrester has an engine that has valve interference at piston Top Dead Center. If it is and the timing chain breaks, you are looking at major $$ to recover.

2006 pontiac vibe getting close to 100K and feel the need to change the timing chain. Someone advised that is this breaks it destroys the whole engine Trying to divert trouble later.

It is personal taste. Some places recommend that timing CHAINS be replaced every 90K-100K, but others drive until there is some change in their engine performance that would indicate the timing chain and then change it. Since you have the timing chain and not the timing belt it is up to you.

Generally, I will replace timing chains IF I have to pull my engine out of the car for any reason, but won't change it at set intervals.

Replaced the head gasket. now it's out of time and i don't know how to time it

This is not a job for anybody. If you want the car to run 100% again take it to a expert. Your timing belt/chain was put back incorrectly

Does My 93 Camry have a timing chain or Belt ? when to change it?

its timing belt. This car requires the timing belt to be serviced at every 60k miles. This engine is a non-interference motor, so the engine will not get damaged internally if belt breaks. But other parts externally can become damaged. Also at the same time the timing belt is changed, replace the water pump, idler and tensioner pulleys.
