Heater/AC fan motor keeps running after car is shut off

On a 2002 BMW 325i the fan motor keeps running after the car is shut off. It cycles on and off and usually shuts off after a period of time but has run the battery dead.

No, the heater and a/c fan motor

  • dwitzend Jul 22, 2009

I think the problem could be what BMW calls the " final stage unit" which is a resistor for the blower motor

That's normal when hot, but should't run down the battery. if severly overheats ffnd/fix that problem. the other will probably dissapear . if not excessively hot then the fan heat sensor is faulty....

Instructions for 2002 BMW 325i heater core replacement

This is not a task for the feint hearted and could require a major strip of the dashboard. Go to BMW forums and see if you get an idea of what's involved on that model. Anything with AC as well is usually a bit of a nightmare. If you get it done make sure you flush through and fill full antifreeze quantity to safeguard new heater.

Where is the blower located for a 2002 BMW 325i

E30 Models

The blower is accessible by removing the cover at the top of the firewall in the engine compartment.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. To remove the motor cover, pull off the rubber weatherstrip, cut off wire ties holding the wire that runs diagonally across the cover, unscrew and remove the bolts, and pull the cover aside.
  2. Release the retaining straps, move them to the side, and then remove the blower cover.
  3. Pull off both electrical connectors. Disengage the clamp that fastens the assembly in place by pulling the bottom. Lift out the motor/fan assembly, being careful not to damage the flap underneath.

To install:
  1. The fan and motor assembly is balanced at the factory. Do not disturb the orientation of the fan and motor during installation. Place the fan and motor into the heater and install the clamp.
  2. Connect the wires and install the fan cover. Attach the straps.
  3. Install the outside cover and install the 4 bolts. Install new wire ties on the diagonal wire and replace the weather-stripping. Connect the negative battery cable.
