Question about 1989 Jeep Wrangler

1 Answer

My 89 Wrangler with a amc eagle 4.2 inline 6 has starting problems (the carb. has been rebuilt and it has a new air cleaner) It starts fine in the morning - cold start and will start again if it has only been off a short time ex. putting gas in will start again fine - but if it sits a bit - 1/2 hr or so it just won't fire up. My husband tried at the suggestion of our mechanic keeping the throttle down while starting - it will but it seems hard on the starter motor and when it eventually started black smoke comes out the tail - unburnt fuel

I lost you in chat and I can tell you that you need to clean the throttle body and set the choke on the throttle body, if it is carburated then you need to replace the float as it is allowing to much fuel into the system and flooding the engine the reason you are told to put your foot down all the wa is that is for clearing flooded engines. please contact me so I can help my e-mail is b123153h@yahoo.com and our programs did not wantto talk to each other. My 89 Chevy Suburban Silverado STILL won't start! New coil, spark plugs, rotor, cap, relay, battery, inline fuel filter, fuel pump, solenoid.

Have you checked for spark at the plugs ? Spray some carb cleaner into the throttle body and see if it attempts to run as this can show a fuel problem .

Amc eagle repair

Get yourself some rolls of wire and a box of connectors, a pair of wire strippers and a wire end crimping tool, and replace each wire ONE at a time. Your only other option is to take the breather that you removed from the carb to put the gas in, and go find another car that it will fit. Drive that one.

1988 amc eagle wagon when starting cold it will not stay running. it will start back upwith several pumps of the gas pedal then stalls again when it finally gets to normal operating temp. then it idles...

It sounds like carburetor problems. Have you tried a new gas filter?
Check if the choke is operating properly-it may be open too far for a cold engine. The fuel level in the carburetor bowl may be set too low. You might also want to check volume flow from the mechanical fuel pump: disconnect gas line to carb and catch the fuel in a container as you crank the engine-watch fuel flow and volume-it should give a pint or two after half a minute of cranking, maybe less cranking time. Also check the needle valve at the inlet for carb-sometimes a tiny bit of trash or debris will clog up the needle valve. If all else fails, try a rebuild kit for the carb-those simple old carbs should be easy to rebuild.
How long since last tune-up?

Amc dies?

For a older car like yours, sometime sick just like an older people. Car is different, if you can find the reason why cause this kind problem, as soon as you fix it, it will run for a while, but it is not easy, I think when you drive for a while, the engine is hot and inside is over heated, the ring on the piston expanded, that’s cause the engine stalled, after 10 to 15 minutes, the engine cool down, it will start and drive a short distance again and wait until the engine getting hot again, it will stall again.

How do you solve this problem, go to junk yard and find a low mileage engine put in or rebuild your engine.

Hope this can help.
