This is a security feature actually , turn your steering wheel to a 9 pm position , jiggle steering wheel and jiggle key in ignition at same time , ignition jams up and locks , it is a security thing usually happens when you exit it a car by putting force on steering wheel to propel you out of car

Is it a manual transmission? I know some of the older
Saabs need the transmission in reverse to get the key out. Try wiggling the shifter and see if it helps with turning the key.

Nope , what it is that happens is to get the ignition to turn if you exit car with force on steering wheel steering wheel locks ignition , so you have to move steering wheel to 9 oclock position jiggle steering wheel and key simultaneously you could look at youtube videos

Key fob only works panic button on my 05 saab 9-3t no door or trunk lock and key wont turn ignition after battery disconnect please help

Try this and please let me know it it works for you. A pro mechanic told me a week ago that I am talking rubbish, but I got this FROM a pro mechanic and it has worked for many members here.
Resetting a Vehicle Anti-Theft System after Battery Disconnect
This is how you reset an anti theft system if you have the anti-theft light on, or your car is cranking, but you have no spark.

Doing a full reset of the anti-theft system.

Disconnect both battery leads for at least two hours.
Hold the negative and positive leads together for 5 minutes to fully discharge any residual power in capacitors.
Put the key in the ignition, but not turned on or Fob close to steering wheel. VERY IMPORTANT!
Connect the positive lead.
Connect the negative lead in one swift movement.
Wait 15 minutes for the system to fully reset.

2007 saab 9-3 left turn signal not clicking back up... not hearing thr click when turning the wheel to left, right clicks and works fine.

Guideline / pointer:
According to an auto-electrician when my car did the same, the steering wheel / shaft cam operates a pair of spring-loaded, interlocked levers connected to the turn switches.
Therefore, a spring or lever may have dislodged / broken.
Needs steering wheel removed, possibly the switch assembly as well.

Car was running fine. had battery disconnected & reconnected. Key will not turn in ignition switch. getting a reading that says steering lock malfunction, stop car safely

Hi Doug...

Not currently all up on Saabs...
Many years since I worked on one...

but reading the owners manual (ALL 288 Pages)... has convinced me your configuration is fairly close to the BMW ...
(with which I am FAMILIAR).

Even though you have a "chip" key...
the lock still ought to work manually.

Battery NOT your trouble...
That would definitely give you OTHER problems
(specifically key "NOT RECOGNIZED").

On other cars ... I have experienced a similar issue caused by the steering column holding the lock lever from releasing:
If the wheels are turned against a curb... or hard in any direction... TURN THE WHEEL HARD (just "hard"... as in steering... no Samsonite Gorilla here) in THAT SAME DIRECTION and try to wiggle the key in the lock as you attempt to turn it... then try against that direction... again "HARD".

Failing that... jack up the front of the car until you can see some free-play in the steering wheel... by pushing the front tire back and forth... then try the key.

Hope this helps

Ignition stuck on lock

1. Check battery - even if otherwise good, if it measures under 12 volts (even just under) it won't start. Saab's are finicky about that.

2. Does immobiliser recognize the key? If not, it won't turn. Are you using an original key mated to the car or a replacement key fob without the electronic guts?

3. Does key open the door? If so, put in ignition, turn to ON (if you can) and press Open Door button on key. Try even in Off position if not.

4. DO NOT spray anything into the ignition keyhole (as others may suggest). It will gum it up. If you have to, remove ignition keyhole and clean with alcohol.

I have got an error message saying "Steering Lock

well it has happened to me quite a few times and all you need to do is when it comes take the key out, put the key in but dont turn it, youll hear it trying to unlock, pull(turn) the steering wheel to help it unlock. when it releases should have no prob. its not a malfunction just need to assist it as with many cars that have steering wheel locks.

Ignition and steering locked.1990Saab turbo Hatchback auto

Your ignition lock probably has sticky pin inside of tumbler.
Try spraying some WD40 or PB Blast into the key cylinder.
