well its kinda cheap but broke right now !!! well i was thinking of getting a second opinion too as my car starts but it makes realy bad noise, mechanic says pistons gone but i think could be only springs which are in the engine has come off or somthing just very confuse !!!!

  • ami_siyanxxx Jul 23, 2009

yeah there is a tick noise dose that means engines gone totally ????

The cheapest thing to do in a situation like that is to replace the motor with a used motor, the amount to remove the motor and have it rebuilt will cost more then just replacing it.

I would get a second opinion, if the car starts and runs it may be something else, unless it has a knock or a tick noise in the engine.

  • radd69 Jul 23, 2009

No it can be fixed and could be more money to to fix, as long as the tick is in the engine, a tick could also be a exhaust manifold leaking, it never hurts for a second opinion, and in this secenario you have nothing to lose.

Really bad noises are not good But these other guys are right If the motor has serious damage 2nd hand is the way to go Get a second opinion Without hearing the motor we can't diagnose this problem accurately

What is a cylinder compression how much do it cost to replace it

If you have low (or no) compression in one or more cylinders, it can be due to broken/bent valves or valve seats, bad or broken piston rings, or mechanical timing way off. The cost to correct is very dependent on the specific cause. Best case is mechanical timing is way off (this will show up as low/no compression in all cylinders), assuming no other mechanical damage was done. Worst case is engine rebuild or replacement.

2000 Ford Escort zx2 runs rough and stalls in reverse

The Ford Escort ZX2, the 2.0 liter is a interference engine,The valve and the piston kissed each other as they met with a broken timing belt,Just to let you know a cam position sensor does not create rough idle, it can stall the engine at a stop sign, but the solution is a valve job, and who ever put the timing belt on after the job should have done a cylinder effeciency test.

I have a 2003 Saturn vue with 138,000 miles. the machanic says the cam shafts are not turning and the timing belt is broken . How expensive is this to do, can I do it myself ?

First you need to find out if the engine is an interference engine or free running. If an interference engine, it means the valves will interfere with the pistons if they become out of time--like when a timing belt breaks. this means the valves will hit the pistons and vice versa. Usually the valves are bent and the cylinder head must be removed to get to the bent valves and replace them. If the engine is free running, the valves and pistons will miss each other if they become untimed. So all that is needed in this case is a new timing belt. Much, much easier and less costly than removing the cylinder head.

To find out if your engine is free running or interference, check out this website:

scroll down and look for the interference check.

remove No. 4 plug add teaspoon of engine oil, compression test if compression rises 120 psi plus, points to broken piston rings, below 90 psi burnt or stuck exhaust valve.

V.w.jetta gas eng. timing belt broke ? .shut engine off then wood not start . dealer says needs head work ? bent valves? without disasembling is it possible valves never came into contact with pistons ?

Hi, im afraid i can only give you bad news im afraid, if the engine was running even on tick over when the belt snapped then this would have caused the valves to smash into the pistons as the top half of engine would have stopped spinning leaving at least 2 valves in the out position but what causes the damage is the bottom half of the engine, as their is no weight on the cams to keep them turning they stop at once but the bottom half the crank has a big weight called the fly wheel now when the belt snapped the cams would have stopped dead but the crank would have carried on turning under its own weight and this is what causes the piston or pistons to hit the valves this then causes the valves to bend and all the valves will need replacing and the whole top end rebuilding with new seals and the new valves and valve seats will need grinding in.

how ever as its only usually the top half that gets damaged you could save yourself some time and money by calling a local breakers yard and see if they have a cylinder head lying around or even a whole engine as the cost of rebuilding you head and engine would cost more than it would to get a second hand cylinder head or if you didnt want to take any chances look into getting a whole engine.

look at the costs involved get a quote off you garage for the head rebuilt and new valves, tell them worse case if it needed complete head rebuild with all new valves and valve seats and all the seals get a price on the whole job then ask them how much it would cost if you supplied a working cylinder head or even whole engine then compare the prices and check with some breakers for cylinder head prices or engine and you should find that a second hand head will work out cheaper than having yours stripped and rebuilt with new parts.

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

please rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks

please explain to me how to replace a cylinder without removing the engine block.
I can see mybe a spark plug, spark plug wire, or a coil pack
but removing a cylinder or even a piston, impossiable

your machanic is an idiot

to solve your problem of runing rough
have someone with enough commen sense to do a full tune-up and full filter change

The timming belt broke on a 1998 rav-4 ,2.0 L. did it bend the valves? She was driving on the highway and it does not seam to have any compression.

95% of the time, yes you have damaged the valve and the pistons also being up in the higher RPM of your engine. Best thing to do is to replace the whole engine at this point, since the cost to replace the heads and damaged pistons are close to replacing the whole engine with warranty.
Thank you for using fixya and good luck.

Timing belt broke i just readed that when the timing belt break on this car u have to replace the head cylinder coz the valve are bent is this true its 2000 daewoo laganza

True, the engines are low tolerance engines which means that there is no room for the pistons and valves in the cylinder walls at the same time. When the pistons are TDC and the valves are open, they will hit causing damage to the valves and pistons.
Be more cost efficient to replace the whole engine, rather then just the valve train redone. Chances are the the pistons will have some type of damage and it will not just be one piston that will need to be replaced.
Thank you for using Fixya and sorry for the bad news

Take your vehicle back to your mechanic, and have him perform a DRY, then a WET compression test. Please provide both readings back to me. In the meantime, ask him what it would cost you to him replace the piston rings. This is your problem. The 2 tests will simply verify me thinking.
