Wow! Thanks a bunch. The repair shop wants about $200 to replace these. Now that I know where they are I can replace them myself using the other directions I read on the site

There is a sensor on the driver's side of the head (temp) and a level sensor in the bottom of the coolant jug.

Coolant temperature sensor location on 97 ford expedition

I believe they are located in the intake manifold somewhere. Make sure the one that tells the computer the coolant temp is ACTUALLY giving out the correct temperature. I had a bad one one time in a 1993 Ford F-150, 5.8L....... no check engine light came on but hard to start. The bad sensor was telling the computer it was 32 degrees F when it was almost 80 degrees outside.!!
Garbage in=Garbage out.

Here is a video link from Youtube. There are 2 sensors, 1 for the guage and the other tells the on-board computer how hot/cold the coolant is. The one for the guage has 1-wire and the other one has 2 wires.
Hope this helps, ask more if you need to. What kind of problem are you having? No heat inside? Guage needle not getting into the normal area?

Whrere is the coolant sensor located

On a V8 there are two sensors, the are located on either side of the neck where the thermostat is located. Standing in front of the vehicle the one on the left is for the temp. guage, the one on the right is for the computer.

If it is the six cylinder and you're getting the "COOLANT SENSOR BAD" message on the VIC that refers to the level sensor in the header tank. Is common in this models, I have one '93 ZJ and my signal Sensor Coolant Level also is ON for long time; first, try to clean the plug and reset the ECU. If the signal show again, maybe you need replace this sensor.

For more details about location and diagnotics, check this documents:

- Page 11 Diagnostics/Service Procedures

Hope this helps.

Location of coolant temperature sensor and location of fan coolant relay switch

Removal & Installation To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Engine coolant into a suitable container to a level below the ECT sensor gm_car_cad_sev_ect_loc.gif

    • ECT sensor harness connector (A)
    • ECT sensor
To Install:
NOTE: Use care when handling the coolant sensor. Do not drop damage to the coolant sensor will affect the operation of the fuel control system.
NOTE: Replacement components must be correct for the application. Components requiring the use of the thread locking compound, lubricants, corrosion inhibitors, or sealants are identified in the service procedure. Some replacement components may come with these coatings already applied. Do not use these coatings on components unless specified. These coatings can affect the final torque which may affect the operation of the component. Use the correct torque specification when installing components to avoid damage.
  1. Coat the sensor threads with GM P/N 1050805 sealer or equivalent
  2. Install or connect the following:
    • ECT sensor
      1. Torque to: 15 lb-ft. (20 Nm)
    • ECT sensor harness connector
    • Engine coolant
  3. Start the engine then idle until normal operating temperature is attained.
  4. Recheck coolant level and top off as needed.
  5. Test drive the vehicle.
--- I couldn't find a reference for the 'fan coolant relay switch' although I'm sure there is one on this car.

The hot coolant guage goes up and down

Check the coolant level when the engine is cold. If it's correct there may be a loose/dirty connection at the temperature sensor. The location differs depending on the engine.

Replaced water pump, alternator, radiator, crank sensor and no coolant leaks and car has antifreeze, but why is low coolant dashboard indicator light keep flashing on 97 saturn sl2

Inside the coolant reserve tank there is a sensor for coolant level.

Over time, this sensor can get stick.

Inspect the coolant reserve tank for crack or leak.

Locate the coolant level switch/sensor and soak it in clean warm water.

Make sure it's free to move up and down the float path.

Top off the coolant tank with coolant only.
