2003 Suburban with Red Neutral Light 4WD Indicator

I have a 2003 Surburan with this similar problem. My issue is when I start up the Red Neutral Light is lit on the 4WD control panel . If upon start up the Light is in the 2WD position everything works fine, I can switch to all positions. If the Red Neutral light is on I can not switch to 2WD or 4WD although I can drive with no problems. This is an itermittent problem.

8/19/2009 I had this problem and it cost me 2700.00 to repair the truck. The problem is the "encoder Modual" that controls the 2/4 system. Unfortunately I did not know and my rear end needed to be repaired. The encoder cost about 388.00 at the dealer, good luck

Hate to have to say it, but you need to have a qualified shop scan the 4wd system . There are several parts to this system that will affect it's operation and the only real way to tell what's wrong is to scan the controller. The light has been telling you it had a problem, and needed service.

Will not start in park but will start in neutral is a 2002 chevy suburban z71 5.3 liter 4wd

I would think that the neutral safety switch is bad. It's bolted to the driver side of the transmission. Also check the wiring going to it.

I have a 1995 suburban 4WD with a 350 gasoline engine. I can not switch to 4WD. When I try to switch to low and not drag the lever quickly over. Will the scratch sounds. I get no light in the 4WD indicator...

First, make sure the engine is sufficiently warm, at least 80 degrees.
The vehicle should be slowly rolling at about 2 to 5 mph and the transmission should be in NEUTRAL when shifting into 4x4 Low Range. It will grind and/or lockout otherwise. 4x4 High is suitable for snow and ice driving on pavement or gravel roads.

Chevrolet Suburban 4 Wheel Drive Indicator Lights

Just serviced my own 4x4 Suburban, by buying a 2nd hand encoder motor and replaced the old one, which was trashed by the winter salt. The device is prone to failure since it's made of alluminium and water has an easy time of entering the unit and trashing it.

CAUTION: Abbreviated gratuitous information of how an encoder motor was serviced. If unqualified to deal with repair, seek professional service.
CAUTION: Read at one's own risk.

To replace it, you need to crawl under the vehicle and remove the front drive shaft;

Disconnect the electric harness to the encoder motor, followed by unbolting it.

Take replacement encoder motor and install. There may be an issue with aligning the cogged cam of the transfer case to the encoder motor. If so, the vehicle's 4 wheels will need to be raised off the ground. The engine started, transmission in Park, and using a Vice-Grip® wrench gently rotate cam clockwise approximately 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch, then while set in this position, stop engine. Now attempt to align and attach the encoder motor.

After successfully attaching new encoder motor, attach its wiring loom.
Test vehicle.
