The coolant fan relay is located in the junction box in the engine compartment. Remove cover and turn over. All the relays and fuses are labeled on the cover and will tell you where the location is.

Where is the cooling fan switch located on my 2005 malibu 3.5liter v6


Cooling fan switch ? The cooling fans (2) on that motor are controlled by three relays . A coolant temp. sensor gives temp info to the PCM - engine computer .
During high speed operation the PCM supplies the ground path for the cooling fan 1 relay through the low speed cooling fan relay control circuit. After a 3 second delay, the PCM supplies a ground path for the cooling fan 2 relay and the cooling fan S/P relay through the high speed cooling fan relay control circuit. This energizes the cooling fan 2 relay coil, closes the relay contacts, and provides a ground path for the left cooling fan. At the same time the cooling fan S/P relay coil is energized closing the relay contacts and provides battery positive voltage from the cool fan 2 fuse on the cooling fan motor supply voltage circuit to the right cooling fan. During high speed fan operation, both engine cooling fans have their own ground path. The result is a parallel circuit with both fans running at high speed.
The PCM commands Low Speed Fans on under the following conditions:
• Engine coolant temperature exceeds approximately 106°C (223°F).
• When A/C is requested and the ambient temperature is more than 50°C (122°F).
• A/C refrigerant pressure exceeds 1 310 kPa (190 psi).
• After the vehicle is shut off if the engine coolant temperature at key-off is more than 140°C (284°F) and system voltage is more than 12 volts. The fans will stay on for approximately 3 minutes.
The PCM commands High Speed Fans on under the following conditions:
• Engine coolant temperature reaches 110°C (230°F).
• A/C refrigerant pressure exceeds 1 655 kPa (240 psi).
• When certain DTCs set .

I have an 05rendezvous,need to locate switches for cooling system,fans aren't co ming on & now I'm going to need a new radiator,cuz plastic broke.But it broke before fans gave out.Which I changed stat


The engine cooling fan system is controlled by the body control module (BCM) and the powertrain control module (PCM) or engine control module (ECM). The BCM performs the calculations as to how long, when and what speed the cooling fans should turn on. The BCM then sends a class 2 message to the PCM/ECM to engage the cooling fan relays. If there is a malfunction with the BCM, the PCM/ECM will control the engine cooling fans independently. The engine cooling system consists of 2 electrical cooling fans and 3 fan relays. The relays are arranged in a series/parallel configuration that allows the PCM/ECM to operate both fans together at low or high speeds. The cooling fans and fan relays receive battery positive voltage from the underhood accessory wiring junction block. The ground path is provided at G100.
During low speed operation, the PCM/ECM supplies the ground path for the low speed fan relay through the low speed cooling fan relay control circuit. This energizes the cooling fan 1 relay coil, closes the relay contacts, and supplies battery positive voltage from the cool fan 1 fuse through the cooling fan motor supply voltage circuit to the left cooling fan. The ground path for the left cooling fan is through the cooling fan 2 relay and the right cooling fan. The result is a series circuit with both fans running at low speed.
During high speed operation the PCM/ECM supplies the ground path for the cooling fan 1 relay through the low speed cooling fan relay control circuit. After a 3 second delay, the PCM/ECM supplies a ground path for the cooling fan 3 or S/P relay and the cooling fan 2 relay through the high speed cooling fan relay control circuit. The three relays are located in the under hood fuse / relay box ! You need to have it checked for DTC'S -diagnostic trouble codes ! An you need a GM Tech 2 scan tool !
This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTCs:

Important:: A 3 second delay occurs before the powertrain control module (PCM)/engine control module (ECM) changes the cooling fan speed.

which fan? there can be 3 fans.
1 cab blower
engine fan
a/c condenser fan/
why not say , my x is dead, name x then ask for fuse and relay
answers are all USA spec, car, this is USA forum.
ill toss dice and land , engine cooling fan. (no engine stated so...."?)

engine rad fan, fuse 23 (if blown kills spark so.... not that...)
Radiator fan control relay #1 and 2 and 3
there are 3 relays, both fed from fuse 8
a 3 speed fan it is. , fan has 4 wires , one ground and 3 speed feeds.

i have the schematic.

if you were to look at lid its marked.

2003 Chevy Impala, running hot. Changed fan shroud because cooling fan wouldn't turn on, switched out fan relays, no check engine light. Cooling fan still will not turn on.


Would turn the key on no need to start it and unplug the ect engine coolant temp sensor. If fans come on then suspect a faulty etc which may not turn on the engine light. Which engine is in the vehicle so I can help locate the ect which is usually by the thermostat housing.

It overheats when in traffic ior when it is idling


I have fixed my own 2002 Jeep Cherokee twice for the overheating issue. Overheating can be caused by a number of different problems, but one of the most notorious problems for the Jeep is the 'radiator fan relay switch'. When the temperature thermostat goes over 210, it tells the relay switch to turn on the radiator fan to cool down the engine. If that relay switch isn't working, the fan never turns on and thus your engine overheats. Here's a simple test to check if this is your overheating problem:
1. Start up your Jeep, open the hood, and let it run to the point where the temperature gauge on your dashboard creeps past 210.
2. Once it goes past 210, go over to the engine and see if the radiator fan kicked on. (the radiator fan is right behind the grill, circular with big plastic blades) If yes, then the relay switch is working. If no, then you probably need to replace the relay switch or the radiator fan motor is bad. But more than likely, it's the notorious relay switch.
3. Turn off the Jeep asap to avoid damaging the engine.

You can purchase a 'radiator fan relay switch' from most Jeep dealerships if they have a service dept. It should be around $75.
(I saved over $700 by not taking my Jeep to an auto shop to fix this) To change out the relay switch, you need to take off the passenger side front headlight. There's a black plastic guard behind the headlight and the relay switch is located under/behind that guard. If your Jeep ever experienced this problem before, you may see a cut-out where someone replaced this part before. If there's no cut-out, you can check out this link to see a picture of where to cut.

Put in a new dash control panel,new pressure switch,full of freon.fuses and relays are good. jumped low pressure switch.still no power to ac clutch. HELP..


YOUR a/c compressor is cut on by the vehicle pcm(computer).pcm sends a signal to a/c relay to energize relay which sends power to compressor. Have you checke dall the fuses with a test light? last dodge i worked on had a blown horn fuse which powered a/c system also. block said nothing about this. here is a diagram999f7d5.gif

Overheating 2003 dodge durango. What could be the problem??


When engine running, ensure no engine combustion gas bubbles in coolant resevoir (if so, the head gasket is blown).

Check cooling fans are operating ok (when required when car warms up), if not check
1) fuse,
2) relay operation,
3) heat sensor switch.

Replace thermostat.
When re-filling cooling system, bleed off any airlock as necessary.

Check for collapsing (soft) coolant hose on suction side of waterpump when engine revs above idle.
